my evinrude motor dies out after 2,000 rpm's. I can run it all day at 2,000rpm's. i have put fresh gas, checked the primer bulb, checked the fuel pump, and cleaned the carb. carb was just rebuilt last season, ran fine then. i did all according to the manuals instructions. compression is good and balanced. what should i try next?

Hi, ITF.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The next thing to try is posting your trouble in the Johnson & Evinrude Troubles Forum. This forum is for Non-Repair Discussions.

I will move this for you.

Good luck. :)

Check all your fuel lines for hardness or cracks. How did you check the fuel pump? Also check your tank's vent.

Hi Bill,

All the fuel lines and tank vent check ok. I tested the fuel pump by removing the fuel line from the carb and placing it into a container, then I cranked the engine about 12 times and observed the fuel delivery pulses into the container.

ITF

Did you use a fuel stabilizer last winter? Sounds like you might have a high speed jet blocked or partially blockes. Take carb off and make sure this jet is cleaned out. Oil companies used to put some stabilizers in their fuels but not anymore so it results in more profit for them. These gasolines now will "varnish" up in just a month or two now if not used.

Hi F57,

Yes, I did use a fuel stabilizer. I agree that it sounds like the high speed jet. I have removed it and cleaned the whole carb this past weekend and it made no difference. Maybe I missed something. I will probably remove it a clean it one more time. I am also going to pull the flywheel and check the power pack. I'm convinced it's a fuel probelm.

ITF

If you have the carb off why not rebuild it? I know you just had that done last year. The kit if I remember is around 20.00. Make sure that your float isn't sticking. It may be running out of fuel at that rpm. There are a lot of posts on setting the float.
Does the engine actually die or just runs real slow. If it's just real slow you might have dropped a cylinder. Check your powerpacks and make sure you have spark to all your plugs.

Thanks F57,

I will go ahead and rebuild the carb and check the power pack. It just completely dies at about 2k -2.5k RPM's, but it starts right back up and idles fine.

ITF

while carb is apart make sure the little gasket is around center tube (brass tube with the holes)
also make sure carb float bowl is flat in this area any air leak here will cause the problem you describe

I don't recall an o-ring around the brass tube, can you tell me more?
