Re: Used Honda Civic on water?

A deckboat would be your best bet.. You need the utility of a pontoon (for people capacity) and the v-hull for cruising and skiing etc..

A lot depends on your budget. The deckboats, at least newer good looking ones, come at a high price. If $22K is in your ballpark then you should be able to find one.

The Chapparal is the best of the breed, I believe, in the brands you mentioned. Although any hull well cared for will serve you well. The powerplants are all the same with the exception of the decision of Mercruiser or Volvo. I own a Merc myself, but have heard that Volvo is superior. I guess it depends on what your mechanic will service..

If going with the Deckboat, I would recommend at least a 5.0l V8. Bigger if you can afford it. With all those girls, you'll need the ponies to get up on plane..

bonbuttercup,

I think the deck boat is the ticket for what you do. A nice compromise of features.

The Chap looks nice and worthy of inspection. Good Luck

Kevin

Re: Used Honda Civic on water?

One nice thing about the Chapparal deckboat, and maybe others, is that it has a head on it. You can't tell me that your friends wouldn't appreciate that. The Chap that you listed looks real clean. I tried to find a load/weight capacity on it but it isn't listed, even on the Chap website.

You'll need at least a 1300-1400 lb capacity above fuel and water weight. Even at that, 10 people will be real cozy.

But hey, that may not be so bad. You'll have a built in excuse to keep all of the sharks out of the boat. :p

Here is a link for a 22' Galaxie deck boat. I don't know anything about these, they don't have a head but they list a 2000 lb total load capacity and/or 14 people. It has a lot more seating area than the Chap. I also don't know where you would find one used but they are made in Tejas, not too awful far from you.

http://www.galaxieboatworks.com/2200_deckboat.html

Sounds to me like a deck boat is your best bet but I think you will find that none of the boats including pontoon boats are going to have enough room for 10 people unless you are just going to drop them off a couple hundred yards away. Most of the bigger boats down here (>25 feet) don't have that many people onboard. Don't forget 10 women means 10 towels, 10 bags, 7 hats, and 14 cell phones. Where you gonna put all that? Are you going to just ferry people to a beach or are you all planning on staying on board for an hour or more. I say trim your group to 6 and send the other 4 to me, I can use at least 3 and I'll get a good price for the other.

Re: Used Honda Civic on water?

Well, 10 isn't an absolute number. I've got me + 4 chickies for Memorial Day weekend, and usually it's the girls driving our friends' boats on the big weekends as they drink too much and hand the vessel over to us to drive them home...

What's the deal with the Tahoe? Any ideas about the boat quality? Nice looking boat, that's for sure.

The Galaxie I posted the link too, above, has ample seating room for 10. Looks to be the roomiest of the 21-22 ft boats I've seen. You can easily fit 5 on the back seat, 3 in the bow, two in the cockpit and even have room for the Bacall of the day to lounge on the rear sun deck and ward off the sharks. ;)

Tahoes are generally considered entry level, value boats. I have only seen them at the boat shows. I can't say I've heard good or bad about them.

I've some bad comments on the Tahoes. Some apparently have a propensity to bow stuff. No personal expereince. Just what I've heard..

Re: Used Honda Civic on water?

I'm leaning, hard, towards the Chap. I like the way it looks, I've been on one before and liked the layout, other than one bad post here about some poor guy who's chap had a non-centered mounted motor and the boat listed to one side and he finally had to sue Chaparral, that's the only negative thing I've found. And to be honest, no matter what the vehicle or boat, no matter how good, there's always a few where people had issues. My boss is suing Range Rover right now for his brand new SUV...so there will always be at least one critic in the bunch. Now I need to find a 22-24' Sunesta for around $20k...if anyone's selling one, please let me know.

Re: Used Honda Civic on water?

you're looking at good boat names. chap is one of the better for the boat you're looking for. just realize you will spend a little more, or have to go with something a bit older.

if you want to save some money, check on stingray. their 22' deckboat is real nice (friend has one) and has a 10 person capacity, although it's tight with that many people.

i'd look for something closer to 24' if you can afford it.

good luck-

Re: Used Honda Civic on water?

I hate to sound like a rich *****, which I'm not, but the money isn't that much of a big deal as I'm selling a home and making a nice profit off of it. I'd PREFER to not go higher than $20, but I will if it's the right boat. I'll look into the Stingray, but so far I haven't found any others that I like...

I find my I/O quite a bit more cumbersome when beaching and in low water areas. Also, the outboard will have less winterizing needs than an I/O. I do love the quiet and smoothness of my I/O however..
Buttercup, I want to emphasize the points that he's made. If your goal is days on the water with a bunch of friends, really consider an outboard. It frees up a huge amoung of clear space inside the boat, good not only for seating more people, but for those people to be able to move around.

Also, look at a "beamy" boat- one that is wide. In a 20 ft. boat, a 6 foot wide floor will be surprisingly roomier than a 5 foot floor. I switched from a 20 foot I/O type of boat with a 5 foot bottom (aluminum inboard jet, but same engine as an I/O), to a 21 foot outboard with a 6 foot bottom and it is like the difference between my Subaru station wagon and my Suburban (seriously!).

The boats are essentialy "the same size" but mostly because of the outboard, and secondarily because of the width, the functional difference is huge. The old boat would seat 8 people, but you literally had to walk over people's legs to get around, and the back of the boat was nearly taken up with the engine compartment. With the new boat, 8 people can sit and get past each other without touching (width) and we could not only add another 2 without problem, but everyonne can move around and do stuff in the back of the boat (width plus lack of engine compartment).

My personal opinion is that for a use involving groups (friends, or family), if you're going less than 24 feet, stick with an outboard juust for the roominess factor. The other advantages and disadvantages of I/O vs. outboard are FAR outweighted in day to day use by a group, in my experience.

Re: Used Honda Civic on water?

No outboards! My mechanic, and my neighbor, and my great friend, among other things ;) owns www.badattitudeboats.com. Mechanical issues are not a problem as Ron will have the boat perfect before it hits water. I don't want an outboard as much as I don't want a Bayliner. Ron won't work on outboards, Ron won't work on Bayliners, and nobody on Parker has outboards. Parker and Havasu is not the place for ugly boats.

Besides, where the engine sits versus room inside the vessle isn't an issue on the deck boats.

Guys, part of this exercise is style as well as functionality. Of course engine stability is the most important, and of course I don't want to break down, but on the other hand, I can't be pulling up to Roadrunner or Sundance (if it ever opens again), or the sandbar in Havasu or driving through London Bridge in a pontoon boat with a big outboard engine. V, Jen, and I driving an outboard boat is like V, Jen, and I wearing moo-moos to the sandbar in the middle of summer...again: www.bonbutter.com/us.jpg

I've added a few images to make a nice collage. My mechanic is at the top with me, the big cats on the river are on the lower right...I can't possibly pull up to the sandbar with a big outboard engine with a boatful of girls...

Re: Used Honda Civic on water?

mattttt25: the first one is sold - I talked to the guy already. I don't want a Tahoe, I did some research, not the best boat...kind of cheesy, but the first one is exactly what I'm looking for.
