Re: Used Honda Civic on water?

he will only go to $19k. I just talked to the dealer where he bought his new boat from and asked them about the price, they said $19 is good, but they thought $18,500 is better, and about as low as anyone should consider selling it for...so if he already said $19k, how do I get him down further? If I could be in front of him, I could charm him down, but that's not the case. I don't know how to negotiate very well, it's my weakness.

Guys, if you're out there, please give me your thoughts on this purchase! I'm a little scared that I might either buy something not good or pass up something great.

If it's the one you want be confident in your negotiations, don't let him know that you are in a hurry to purchase. You got the cash, offer $18500 subject to a favorable survey. Take it or leave it.

Finally, and I'm not being sexist here - but use it. Guys are neanderthals when it comes to a pretty girl.

Aldo

Offer his asking price if he will pay half of shipping costs, or pay for a pre-buy inspection by a mechanic of your choice.

Drive the 2 hours and take your mechanic friend with you to check it out, if your mechanic thinks its all set and you like it give him $18,500 he should go for it, if he doesnt figure out if the extra $500 is worth it for you. Simple as that.

If the drive is too far for you put money on it pending a water test, thats a very normal thing to do, he if doesnt want to go for that keep looking.

Re: Used Honda Civic on water?

Well, after pushing the owner more, I found out it's been in salt once in 1996, the sink isn't working, and it has some small cracks by one of the bimini attachments on the boat.

Also, apparently he has only 3 service records as well - "the place I get it repaired moves all records to storage after a year". I asked him to fax me copies of his records, which is when he supposedly realized he apparently "didn't save all of them" and only has 3.

I told the seller that I couldn't give him $19k for the boat that's been in salt without complete service records and with a sink that doesn't work. I told him I didn't feel comfortable giving him only $900 UNDER what a dealer would sell the boat for, knowing the dealer would more than likely come down to $19,500 because we all know that we have to make some kind of deal to feel good about a purchase.

I told him I would consider $18,000, upon inspection and diagnostics, but no more...

If he comes down on the price, and the engine is OK, I'd take it. If not, it wasn't meant to be. I know God will find me a boat out there somewhere that's just perfect for me. At the very least, each time teaches me how to negotiate and be firm on what I want.

Good thoughts. I know its tough to buy a high ticket item without first seeing it- I know I just bought a car off ebay so I know how you feel about the distance. I would call around locally to all the marinas and see if they know of a boat you desire that would be the easiest I would think.

Also remember theres problably a reason why he is selling it, I realize he replaced it with the same boat only new, but there must have been some reasons to do so.

Looks like a nice boat. Should look nice full of girls (but then again what boat wouldn't). 120 degree weather? Where is this place again?

Gotta bid low and meet halfway. Good luck!

bonbuttercup,
I have noticed that when I am planing on buying I will either be really excited and feel good about the item or I will have something in the back of my mind trying to tell me its not quite right. Every time I bought with that good feeling everything worked out well but most of the times when I bought with that "not quite right" feeling I wasn't real happy with my purchase.

Luna Sea:

Parker, AZ (you can mapquest it by zip code 85344). It's about 30 miles south of Lake Havasu.
