First time out, I'm a little miffed!

Well, after a few weeks of looking online, visiting dealers, and surfing online, I found my 1st boat. '95 24' Cruisers Aria, 5.7, Mint condition, meticulously maintained. Waited a week for all the financing and insurance to go through, and yesterday I was going to drive the boat from the dealer to my marina on the water. Since I'm new to boating, and was unfamiliar with the waters I had an experienced friend come with me and make sure I didn't wind up posting in the "stupid human tricks" forum instead of here. So, we untie from the dock, follow the directions of the yard guy on where to head into the water, and start idling out. about 500 yards out, still idling, another boat pulls out of the marina behind us and powers up as if he was going to pass us. My friend says, "Its's OK, just let him pass us" So I wait for him to do so. He pulls past us adn as he does he gives us both a dirty look and shakes his head and rubs his finger together in the naughty-naughty gesture. WTF?? So, we get on it a little bit and now are cruising nicely, The other guy is about a mile infront of us, and I see him pulling about. As we approach I start to turn so I can pass on his port, just like I was taught in CG classes. He cuts us off, almost sending my bow into the side of his boat. He walks to the side of his boat, and with a Really angry face says,"HEY, YOU A@#HOLES OK?" - Yea, we're ok- "THEN FU@#ING BACK OFF!!!" I figured screw this, and gunned it and got out of there. He didn't follow, and my friend and I looked at each other in stunned disbelief. I asked him if I had done anything wrong, and he said no. Now in my normal life, I would have beat the sh#t out of this guy, but being my first time on the water, I wanted to keep a low profile. Anyone have any idea what this could have been about, I made no wake in the marina, and was well past the wake buoys before I ever even gave it a bit of gas, and if he was following me what he hell was he talking about with BACK OFF? The only thing I can think I did was that when we were out in open water, I was playing with the trim tabs, getting used to their operation, and the boat was listing quite a bit side to side. But even so, I was at least a mile in front of this guy, and when he approached, he was in no way being friendly. My frind later told me, "I've been boating for 10 years, and even while screwing around, I've never had a dirty look or an unkind word from anyone on the water" I just hope this isn't a look at things to come for me on my boat.

yup. just an unfortunate experience that doesn't happen much. you'll find that most boaters love to smile and wave at every boat going by. that's the right thing to do. and if you really want to make friends, tell every captain you see how much you like their boat. you'll have more friends than you know what to do with.

He must be the clown that owns the water. I love to smile and do the have a great day thing. Drives them crazy, but doesn't issue provokation.

Sounds like the guy was either drunk or having a bad day. I wouldn't worry about it. If it happens again or if you hear similar reports about him then I would probably report it to the proper authorities. Nobody should be nearly that close to your boat - that is a clear violation.

Ya lost me there. At the begining of your story, he was about a mile in front of you. At the end, you were about a mile ahead of him?

Yea Canuck, I pulled out of the dock, I was about a mile out still idling. He powered up to me, I let him pass, and when he was about a mile out, he made his big slow turn, and proceeded to stay in front of me, not letting me pass his port side.

Matty,
Don't worry about him. He is just jealous that you are a boat owner and more civilize on the open than him. :D ;) Enjoy your boating experience. There are more friendly people out there than you think and don't let this one incident bother you.

Re: First time out, I'm a little miffed!

Reminds me of a time last summer. I was coming downriver in my little 10 foot inflateable, and headed into a cove on my left where they sell ice. There's a red on the right and a green on the left, but I cut inside the green by about 50 feet as I was just putting along with the mutt enjoying the day. This jerk in a 20 foot boat's coming out of the cove, he should leave the green on his right, but he cuts way way right, into the shallows, just to stop in front of me and start screaming at me for being out of the channel, and on the wrong side. I'm in a mooring field surrounded by little daysailers and this guys yelling his head off that "I cut him off". Cause he "has" to be on my left, it's a law ya know? (Must have recently taken a course). Dum sheet. Some people have no common sense, and crack does come to mind................

Re: First time out, I'm a little miffed!

welcome to iboats, matty. So he "came about" to starboard? In a big, slow turn? So maybe, to get to his port side you had to cross his path (albeit nearly a mile away)? Somebody jump in if I'm wrong, you really only have alter your course to pass on his left side if you're on a collision course. And maybe if you are in a marked channel. Which is what Mike is saying, right?

So if I'm visualizing correctly, you're crossing his path from his left to right, so you're on his right (before you cross) and he's on your left? In that case he should make way for you.

Sounds like a candidate for Stupid Human Tricks; it doesn't have to be your own stupid trick.

I think he has a twin a most maria ramps... he's the guy that cuts up guys who don't back up good as him, and always in hurry til he gets his boat in the water, then takes his time loading gear so we all know he has good stuff.Pain in the a.... not much you do (unless you can get away with pounding him) just have to learn to deal with it, and remember almost all boaters are willing to help, and are freindly.

Jim

It is of no matter who's right or wrong. No matter how careful you are, there is no perfect boater. Sooner or later someone will call you a horse's butt for something you deserve or don't. More important is to keep your cool, forget about it and move on. Otherwise boating is not very enjoyable. Please don't take this as preaching, it's my own psychology.

Israel Hands

There definitely are hot heads on the water. And they are always proud of their "attitude". Ignore 'em and do your own thing. Some day they will look silly at the end of somebody's tow rope. ;)

Kelly
