Part of skeg missing

Came back from boating and noticed that the tail end of my skeg looks like it has broken off. Instead of a nice rounded end to it it looks like I am missing the last 1-2 inches. Don't know how it happened or when it happened.

Any advice on what to do? Grind it smooth, get someone to weld a part on, etc.?

Unit is an OMC Cobra from 1988.

jack

you can get a skeggard which bolts on the remaining skeg for about $100. Other options include getting a new skeg welded on. Not sure of the cost.

I had the same thing happen two years ago I pounded it straight and still haven't gotten it fixed.

The skegg guard will minimize further damage too, and it looks good.

Re: Part of skeg missing

I am continually amazed at the abuse the engines take up at where we go fishing in Manitoba. Our outfitter has about 40 15 hp Honda's. They take abuse! I'd say about 5 to ten of them have some skeg damage... some no skeg. They keep going and going?!?!? Tracking for a 15hp fishing boat probably isn't as important as for your boat...

I don't know when the damage occurred, but I noticed nothing during the outing.

My question is really how important is the skeg? If mine is smaller than it started (part of it broken off) what will that do?

Any reccomendations on where to get the skeg guard?

Hey Jack ,mine had a slight bend in it, and I decided to staighten it with a pipe wrench, and a couple of pieces of plywood to prevent gouging. I did such a good job, you can't even see where I did it..... (broke the f.... thing right off). all I did was grind it down, sand prime and paint.I asked the question as you last year. Consesus was as long as the magority of it still there to protect the prop, it all cool.

Jim

Thanks cuzner. Think I will do that. Just curious - what kind of paint did you use?

Hey Jack, The paint I used was quiksilver, phantom black. Picked it up at at a local marine store. cost was about 7 $. I bought the primer at an auto body suppy store. the piece I broke off was on the lower trailing edge, about 3 inches long.I toutched the whole sterndrive while I was at it, you realy can't tell it was damaged now.

Good luck
Jim

There is a powerseller on eBay who always has them listed.

The function of a skeg is to protect the gear case and propeller on your boat's motor. If your skeg is broken, then you're at risk for damaging the gear case, which can be expensive to repair.

Enough of the skeg is still there to protect the prop, but just barely.

Ralph, the powerseller you talk about, is that for a skegguard?
