Periodically, the starter will spin without engaging on my '96 Intruder. I removed the plastic flywheel cover and then removed the Bendix drive and the gear it nests in. I cleaned the drive, lubing it with WD-40 and it operates freely. There were no chipped teeth in any of the gears or flywheel ring gear. Put it all back together and still experience the same problem.
Any ideas? Thanks...

Hi, WR.

Welcome to iboats. :)

WD-40 is a wonderful water displacer and cleaning solvent. It is a lousy lubricant.

Try a thin coating of light oil.

Good luck. :)

Clean all your battery cable ends and the ground cable to the engine block.

Welcome to iboats, neighbor. Now grab your nuts and give them a good twist. :D

Loose connections on batteries with wingnuts are extremely common. Finger-tight isn't enough. Grab a pair of pliers.

If none of the above are the problem, the starter might need a good cleaning inside. There are parts that corrode and it's not uncommon to have to take it apart and clean it up.

Love that Point Beer!

It is common for the cable ends to look clean and the inside of the cable underneath the outer cover be green mush from corrosion that you can't see.

Loose connections appear to be the problem. Should have checked that first off!

Thanks..
