Re: Engine rebuild questions, 1980 E25

I found a slightly cheaper place to get the cyls bored. Made my mind up to go ahead with the project. Ordered today the following...

1 x Lower Main Bearing #205 $14.95
2 x Rod Bearing Loose #4040 $11.56
2 x Wrist Pin Bearing #2797 $42.26
4 x Rod Bolts #RB5000 $8.44
1 x Seal Kit #2685 $29.99 (lower unit)
1 x Gasket Set #4307 $32.95 (powerhead)
2 x Piston #3128P2 $159.90 (Wiseco)

Total $300 plus another $50 for shipping.
I know I will need some smaller stuff like the proper bearing grease etc, but that I will get locally.

SoLittle
Do the "experienced marine" machine shops that rebore these motors also sell pistons/rings? Do they hone the cylinder walls?
None of the marine shops I contacted did the boring themselves. Two of them made recommendations to the same place, good I'm sure, but expensive. I finally did what DANE suggested and asked on a bike forum. That was how I found this cheaper place with good experience of two stroke engines. They did not ask to sell me pistons, but to bring them to be measured.

Wow, that's a great price on the pistons...are they looper or crossflow? My pistons are supposed to get here monday and I still haven't found a crank seal kit or o-rings or center bearing..and haven't got a lower bearing yet. Best of luck on your build..I'm watching this thread closely.

They are crossflow 3 inches plus .020 for oversize. Thank's for the well wishes and the same to you with your project. I can't do much about this for a while until the parts arrive but I will keep posting as soon as something happens.

Pike Just make the shop bore the block to the oversize you need. If they measure the pistons and try to fit them to the bores they will make them too tight! A modern piston is crowned and barrel shaped to small to see and very hard to measure. The proper piston to wall clearence is set in the piston ie. a 3.020 piston like you have is actually 3.0155 to make for 4.5 thousandths of piston to wall clearence if that is what is required the piston manufacturer puts that into the piston and not the bore of the block. They used to check all the bores years ago but now the piston companies hold their pistons to such close tolerences that they are viturally identical.

Sorry for the long reply just my two cents

Re: Engine rebuild questions, 1980 E25

Just a short status update to show this project is not forgotten. I ordered the parts on december 8 and I'm still waiting. The copmpany was quick to withdraw the money from my credit card but does not answer my order status requests. Getting worried about that now and just hope that the parts will turn up.

Called them yesterday and they said the parts had just been sent. Should arrive within next two week if it's true.

This took ages and eons and I had just about given up and written the parts off as a scam. But today when I got home from work they had arrived. Ordered in early december and got them now.
This project will now be thawed up and the cylinders will finally get bored. Looks like I might have a good engine after all when the season starts.

I was wondering how it was going. I just put my powerhead back together this week and it spins noiselessly with the flywheel.I will remount it in the cowling soon. I hope it starts!. Good luck.

An update,
This slow project have taken another step and the block have been dropped off to be bored. Will get it back next week and then the reassembly work can begin.
I'm right now considering if I should tidy up the engine, repaint an make it look nice, or just keep the old and tattered look. The reason for the latter is the frequency of theft where I keep the boat. The thieves seem to prefer new and neat looking engins. They steal the entire boat, transports it away some distance and remove the motor by using a chainsaw on the boat.

Got the block back bored and honed, the cost came out lower than agreed at first. Time to start the reassembly project thus.
What are the chemicals I need for greasing the bearings etc?
Should I omit the adhersive between the block parts as suggested?

OMC has a needle bearing assembly grease. I always used regular grease, never had anything bad happen. I assembly the caged bearings without grease, only lubricated with two-stoke oil.

Re: Engine rebuild questions, 1980 E25

Made progress over the weekend and I now have the powerhead back together. I had no problems getting the old lower bearing off and the new one on. I did have trouble as I bought loose rollers for the rod bearings. I couldn't figure out how to get the old roller needles out of the retainers and the new ones in, decided to reuse the old ones that looked good rather than using too much force, used new wristpin bearings though.
I have now started with the lower unit and replaced the seals for the driveshaft and the propeller shaft. Lost one of the little balls that goes inside the propeller shaft for the neutral "click". Replaced it with one from an old bicycle.
Soon the major parts will come together and the engine will be ready to test in a tank. There is one thing I havn't managed to fully understand from the Seloc manual.
When I have it all assembled, how do I set the ignition to a sane position for the first startup?

Re: Engine rebuild questions, 1980 E25

Yesterday I spent a couple of hours in the garage and finished the lower unit and waterpump service.
Then put the powerhead into the engine housing and the lower unit on. I had some difficulties getting the shift rod into position but managed that after a lot of ugly words. All seemed fine and the shifting worked OK, time to pack it in for the everning.
Then I saw a píece of rubber pipe on the floor, it was the one that covers the driveshaft above the waterpump :( .
I know what I'll be doing tonight thus.

Re: Engine rebuild questions, 1980 E25

The ignition only has max advance setting, by turning the little screw with rubber stop at starter bracket. Is works the way that if you set it at crancking speed, by starter motor with plugs out, 4 deg less advance than manual tells you, the system will advance 4 deg more when full rpm. The initial iddle timing is determined by letting the small roller start to open throttle exactly when it gets right between the 2 marks on cam at stator.

Thank's DANE!

Status,
The forgotten piece is back in and the ignition parts is on. Next is the carb, new fuel hoses, flywheel and gear oil. Then it's time to try to start it up, maybe Friday.

It's all together now and tonight will be the time for the first barrel run if it starts :)
I think I checked and double checked everything, but tonight will show if I did it right.

Believe me, we are all waiting breathlessly to see how things went! Here's hoping for nice blue smoke out the exhaust and water out the pee hole.

Re: Engine rebuild questions, 1980 E25

Success!

A friend came over and we carried the engine out in the back yard and filled the barrel with water. I put a little extra oil in the gas.
Took maybe 10 pulls before it came alive but I immediately shut it off as there were no telltale sprout. I had suspected that as I was not sure if I had managed to get the tube into the top of the waterpump at assembly.
Quickly off wth the lower unit (getting good at that by now). Outside in the fading daylight I could see better than in the garage and this time could align the tube with a thin screwdriver to get into the hole.
New try and it came alive promptly and the pee was steady and strong. Shut the choke off and let in run at moderate RPM for a minute, then tried idle and set the adjustable jet and idle screw.
Got a good steady idle with no knocking or other sounds that shouldn't be there. Ran the engine for about 10 minutes altogether and all seemed well. All this was just 2 hours ago and I'm in the mood to celebrate, think I will crack a cold one open.

And again
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU
for carrying me trough this
:) :) :) :) :)

Great news, PikeFisher! Sometimes success comes slowly, but it comes.

BTW, fishing for Pike is one of my favorite things to do here in Minnesota, USA. If you ever come to this area, let me know and we'll have a go.
