I just purchased 1990 18.5 Checkmate with a 1990 GT 175 Johnson crossflow. There is no spark. I disconnected the main cable to eliminate the key/kill switch and jumped the soleniod. Still no spark. This motor has bad compression in the number 3 cylinder. (5)@90 (1)@45. The person I purchased this from stated that the moter ran good about 16 months ago. I hoped to get it running and use "ring free" to get compression back. Novice when it comes with electrical checks for stator and power pack.

See if you can get ahold of an orignal shop manual.

I am not a mechanic but that 45 number looks bad.

One other idea for troubble shooting help is the Naples Vo-tech on Airport and Estey ave. The outboard class is allways looking for motors to work on. I believe the deal is that you pay for parts and the teachers and students fix the motor for the experience.

Mac

Wings....for what a head gasket costs', I think I'd be getting one and pulling the starboard head to take a look. Sounds like maybe a scuffed cylinder.
