Have a 1969 Johnson 6 hp. Trying to replace the water pump. Got as far as removing the 4 nuts for the lower unit. Dropped down and trying to remove the nut for the shift rod. That thing is so tight I can't get it loose. Tried a screww driver (can't get on it with a 3/8 socket or nut driver. Even tried tapping it with a hammer and chisel. Won't budge. Soaked it with WD-40 and still nothing. Any other ideas. Here a very simple job turns into a nightmare. It won't move.No room to get on it with a wrench either. Don't want to heat it cause or ruining seals or anything else. HELP PLEASE.

PB Blaster is far better than WD-40. Give it a good soak and a tap and it should come out.

Good luck
Steve

Gotta second Stevie on the PB Blaster. Might also need an extra pair of hands to tap the wrench and hold the rod stable.

OK guys thanks. It just took some time and I finally got it. I never had one that tight. Probably was never taken apart. I purchased some penetrating fluid some time ago called Deep Creep made by Sea Foam. After using the WD-40 thought of the Deep Creep and sprayed some of the on and 2 min later it was apart. That stuff is great. I had a Suzuli the the pistons were rusted some and wouldn't turn over. Took off the head and loaded it with Deep Creep and after 1/2 hour it was turning over. Matter of fact, my buddy used it all summer long with no problems. And it was froze solid.
Hey here again, Thanks,
Bill
