Hello! This is my first post on this board, but I've been lurking, and as a result, I think I've figured out the problem with my motor, as follows (question at the end):

Bought a mid-70's 2 hp evinrude a few months ago. First two times I took it out, it ran like a champ. But then, the next few times, it would run pretty well for about 10 or 15 minutes, and then start to die. I could feather the choke and sometimes keep it running, but it would always eventually quit. After puttering around with it (check fuel level, adjust mixture, etc.), it would start fine, but then die after several minutes.

After reading several posts, I realize that my problem is probably that the fuel cap isn't venting (when I check the fuel level, etc., I relieve the vacuum, or give it time for air to leak in). Also, I just remembered that after the first two trips (when it worked fine), I installed a small O-ring on the vent cap shaft, because it was leaking (gas) on the floor of my pickup on the ride home. Even though I'm opening the vent cap when I run the motor, I think the motor vibrations (and gravity) are causing the vent cap to screw itself tight enough to seal on the O-ring. Can't wait to test my theory next time out.

Anyway, here's the question: How can I keep the vent cap venting, while still being able to seal the vent during motor transport? (Currently, my vent cap is a fairly loose fit in the threads, and when I unscrew it, it just vibrates back down).

Thanks!

Russ
