I've got a 1965 5 HP Johnson Sea Horse.
Model No. LD-10S
Can anyone please help me with fuel/oil mix ratio and any other information I may need to know before I fire it up? It has been sitting for quite some time. I just aquired it from a friend.

This model is a 5HP. Does the 50:1 mix ratio apply to this also?

50:1 is the correct ratio, but without looking at the service manual, I can't remember what year these smaller engines went to roller bearings on the rod's. On the engines that used bushing's, I always used 25:1. That is on my own engines anyway.

All JohnnyRudes after 1963 use 50:1. 1964 is when they were fully "frictionless" for fuel mix purposes.

Good luck. :)

Re: 1965 Johnson Outboard

Before firing it up for the first time, I would pull both the spark plugs and drop a teaspoon of TC-W3 (outboard) oil in each cylinder. Then slowly turn the flywheel a couple times feeling for any roughness or binding. Spark plugs should be Champion J6C (or J6J) gapped at .030".
If you have problems, don't worry - fixes for these engines are seldom very expensive.

As soon as you get the engine going, you're going to want to change out the water pump. They need to be changed every season or two, notwithstanding the ammount of use. On your outboard that would be pretty easy since there's no shift rod to disconnect. But it would be wise to have a service manual in hand when you do.
Good luck!

Hi A.J.
Your motor has needle bearings at the connecting rod to crankshaft journals, but it has bronze babbit bearings at top, middle and bottom crank journals, as well as at the wrist-pin end of the connecting rods. With that in mind, I would definitely richen up the oil mixture. Maybe not to 24:1, but definitely somewhere in between. I run my "mixed" motors (ones with a combination of steel and bronze bearings) at 32:1. What the factory recommended and what works in practice is not always one and the same...
- Scott
