Hi all, happy thanksgiving!

I have a question about my crankshaft. In the middle of the crank shaft, I see there are two small holes. The crank shaft is still mounted in the head. Which direction should these holes be facing? should I turn them in, so I do not see them anymore, or out? Also, which direction should the ring gaps be facing? out or in? by out, I mean towards the cover of the crankshaft, by in I mean towards the end where the spark plugs are.

Thanks!

by the two holes I assumne your talking about the main bearing shell
you must locate the larger hole on the pin that sicks up from the block saddle. if not your next post will be about a wiped center main.
I usually stagger the crank seal rings at 90* intravels some place them at 180* intravals. what service manual are you working with ?

Thanks, you are spot on.

I am using a Clymer EvinRude Johnson Outboard shop manual, 48-235 HP 1973-1990, it does leave something to be desired.

on the crank seak rings, you stagger them? the book shows them in line.

if the cover is off the crankshaft, should I be able to see those two holes, or do I need to turn them behind the crankshaft?

Thanks!

dont know
but I will tell you that one of the holes on the shell index's with a pin on the block saddle. if it does not and you bolt it in place very bad things happen.
the other holes are for lubrication.
as far as the seal rings I have a tech frind that leaves them all up. seems not to really make a difference

yes like rodbolt said, It does not matter on the seal rings as they do tend to rotate as the engine is running. you can stagger them but if you take it apart again they will not be in the same place as before. :)

Re: 115 HP V4 E-rude crankshaft question

Hi, one more question, there is a thinner ring right below the main bearing shell, how do I need to align the gap with that one? Does it matter? Thanks!

If you are talking about the ring that holds the two bearing halfs togather, I would make sure the gap is not inline with the split in the two halfs.

there are different size rings as long as you have .0015 clearance and no "LESS" up to a max of .0025 your ok important not to be under the.oo15

yep
the retaining ring is just that. it keeps the shells together for assy reasons. but try to place the gap somewhere other than the shell parting line
