My 1995 150-hp idles at 900-rpm when I run it with the hose (muffs) at home. Is 900-rpms the correct idleling when the motor is on neutral or does it sound to be a little low.

I just bought this motor and I am taking it to the water for the first time and I don't want him to turn off on me when I put it in the water.

Any opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Re: question

You can't really adjust the idle when the engine is running on muffs because there is a lot less exhaust back pressure.

900rpm seems a little high IF the engine was in the water. I suspect it will drop to around 600rpm when submersed. That should be okay. Idle speed should be specified in the engine manual. If you don't have one, that should be the first thing you buy.

Re: question

Hello Roger and welcome to iboats.

Been my experience that when running an engine out of the water you will see at least 200 to 300 rpm more than in the water. Your engine at idle in gear, I believe, should idle around 750 to 850 rpm. Out of gear in the water it'll pick up a little...say to 900 to 950. (these numbers are off the top of my head....they could be a little lower)

With some larger engines that have a fairly accurate tach, I have seen them idle at 1100 to 1200 rpm out of the water. Put them in the water and the rpm drops to 850 to 900 out of gear.

Only way your going to find out is dump the rig in the water and crank it up. You can just back it in on the trailer and start it up. See what she will do at idle before backing off.
