Winterize br running carbs dry or not?

Johnson says to leave the carbs on my 1994-225 full with gas when I winterize because of the VRO. They say if I disconnect the gas line and let the engine run dry, the VRO puts additional oil in the carbs and this causes problems. I see how this is true, but I have disconnected the VRO and mix oil at 50:1. With the 50:1 oil/mix going to the carbs directly from the gas tank, should I let them run out of fuel when I winterize?
Stalker

Just my personal preference, but I leave gas in the carbs because when you disconnect the fuel supply, the carbs run out of gas at different rates leaving some of the cylinders without lubrication. It's only for a few seconds, but... Just spary fogging oil into the engine while it's running with the fuel line hooked up and you'll be fine. I drain the fuel that's left in the fuel hose back into the tank and add sta-bil or whatever. Good to go as far as gas goes.

If you still had the VRO it would double time the oil and more.
Many people don't even winterize and luck out. Some lose and pay the dealer.
As for the carbs,I feel the best bet is to stabilize the fuel and run the motor for 5 to 10 minutes on it.This puts the fuel every where it needs to be.
From there you could cut the gas and let it stall, but some gas would remain at least in a couple of the carbs. You could drain all six float bowls, not easy to do.
But you could leave them full of this stabilized gas,and probably have no problems..GRIN

DHP

Thanks guys. I like the idea of running the gas out because I winterize for 6 months without having an opportunity to squeeze the bulb monthly tomake certain that the carbs stay full of gas. My buddy who has a VRO system, disconnects the oil and gas tubes, runs gas mixed at 50:1 with oil from an auxilary tank for a few minutes and then removes the gas line letting the engine run until it is out of gas. He says that he has never run into a problem. Any thoughts on this method?
Stalker

nightstalker.

Your buddies idea obviously works but it is a major hassle.

Just make sure your fuel is stabilized and run it as DHP Marine described. It has always worked fine for me. Even when I stored them, like you, in Minnesota for six months or more.

How about this for another train of thought:

If you run the carbs dry so that the motor splutters to a halt on the last drops of fuel, then you run the risk of leaving part-burnt fuel and combustion products in the cylinders until you next fire up the motor. Combustion products are corrosive.

If you stop the motor with the key or kill switch, then the spark plugs stop firing before the motor dies, pulling unburnt fuel/oil mix into the cylinders. Fuel/oil mix is a preservative and lubricant. Much kinder to cylinder walls.
