FICHT Temperature Sensor

Been having a water temp alarm on one of my 250's every couple of trips. Steady light and horn. No SLOW activation or rpm drop occurs. Has happened at rpm's from 2000 to 5500. Water telltale is ok and shutting down engine for 10 minutes doesn't clear alarm. Only way to kill it is to use the battery disconnect, then all is fine again. A glitch ?

Was checking the wiring on the temperature sensor and switch and found that the 2 wire engine temperature sensor on the port head was 1/2 turn loose on both engines. It is plastic and doesn't look like a wrench should be used to tighten it. Should any type of sealer be used ?

Any ideas ?

Re: FICHT Temperature Sensor

What year ficht? Has it occured since tightened? There may be a technical bulletin out for this as I have read several similar complaints.

Sorry, the engines are 2003 with about 300 hours. Only hand tightened them as they look pretty fragile. Haven't been out since then.

Re: FICHT Temperature Sensor

They should still be under warranty. Do you have temp GAUGES that will verify it is actually not getting hot? I believe a tech can read the computer on that motor and find the actual code that caused the alarm to narrow the search. Best bet is a warranty repair.

No temp gauges. Last time a tech read the computer he thought it was a glitch. Since the SLOW system doesn't activate, it very well may be that.

Re: FICHT Temperature Sensor

Swap the System Check gauges to see if the gauge is malfunctioning. If the computer "sees" an overheat signal from a temp sender, the motor will automatically go into the SAFE mode and only run about 1200 rpm, until the motor cools down and the key is then turned off and restarted.

2001 and earlier models have a SLOW mode and rpm is limited to 2500.

I will try swapping the gauges.

The last time the computer was read out it did show the overheat events. Not sure if they were from the switch or the sensor.
