I just pulled the gas tank off my 1963 3 HP Evinrude LightTwin and I have some questions.

The gas in the tank was several years old. I dumped it. What should I clean or rince the tank with?

Also, I want to wipe everything down as I tear into the motor. There seems to be a thin layer of grime over just about everything. This is from years of storage in a garage. Should I wipe with gas, alchol, paint thinner, or what would work best?

I am getting ready to pull the flywheel as soon as I buy a harmonic balancer tomorrow. Is there a timing mark or something I need to look out for as I pull the flywheel?

Thanks in advance,

Tom Travis

Re: LightTwin Gas Tank Cleaning

I usually use paint thinner (mineral spirits) to wipe down parts. Alcohol doesn't work well, and gasoline stinks. I guess it's a bit dangerous too. :)
You can use parts cleaner specially made for the purpose but it's important to rinse really well if your using it. They seem to be caustic soda based (no pun intended) and eventually the aluminium gets attacked if it's left on there.

As for pulling the flywheel - no there's nothing special to do. There's a woodruff key in the crankshaft taper that indexes the flywheel. Most balancer pullers don't come with the three 1/4" 20tpi bolts you need, so you may have to buy those separately.

Tell us what you find!

When cleaning a motor, I buy the cheapest paint brushs I can find. I then use a 2# coffee can of hot water, and dish soap. Spray with 409 cleaner on the tough spots.
