I have a 1988 Johnson 225 the problem is that it will not engage in reverse gear unless i give it a burst off throttle , then it seems to go in no problem , it seems to go into reverse ok when its out off the water with no load on the prop , its been like this from i brought the boat last year , the guy i got it off said that he had put a new dog in the box the previous year , what i want to know before i go stripping it down is this a gearbox problem or does one off the linkages need some adjustment, steve

Steve...what you might do before tearing it down is disconnect the shift cable at the engine and try shift manually. If it goes in reverse with no problem, then you have a problem with the control box, the cable or the adjustment is outta whack.

Re: Gearbox Problem

Here again is where you need the proper manual. The shift linkage has to be in proper adjustment all the way from the shift rod in the gearcase, right up to the control box. The engine must shift smoothly through out it's range without strain, or binding. It must also do this without an increase in engine RPM. You want to get to the bottom of this problem. You could end up with damage to the shift dog, or gears. They are not cheap items.

Were you having someone turn the the prop while trying to shift? You have to do this to get the shift dog, and gear in alignment.

Take the key out of the ignition when making this test with someone's help.

Re: Gearbox Problem

Last night I read a post about a motor jumping up like they had hit a log. Someone wrote a great reply about the shift dogs and how they work. I will try to find it and post the location so you can read it. Might be of some help.
