Re: won't idle

I was going to give an automatic yes to this, but no,I don't think so.It's easy to say the oil will cause resistance in the points, making spark problems at low rpms when the voltage is lower from the magneto. But the motor is starting, and when hand cranking, the voltage is even lower, yet you have spark to get it going.

What's more likely happening is you loose the top cylinder because it can't draw the proper fuel because of the leaking crank seal.

DHP

I'm not out in the shop to look at a service manual, and I don't recall if the 73 has a seal, or just use's an oil slinger like the early engines. If it does not use a lipped seal, a small amount of oil seepage is not uncommon. On this small engine, make sure you put in a new boss gasket in the carb, and the idle passage is truly clean. Check and see that the carb is not opening to early. Did you replace the soft plugs in the carb?
