Hello

My outboard motor is a Evinrude 100hp 1989.

It ran just fine up until the end of the summer.
Then it started to smoke when I would first start it up. At one point it just got totally crazy and embarrassing. I also noticed oil leaking from below the exhauste running down the foot.
Also, oil or gas forming a little colored rainbow in the water............NOT GOOD!

Originally it had a VRO but it was bypassed years ago. I mix 50:1

Can someone give me an idea on what's going on?

Thanks
Happy New Year ;)

you may have a float stuck, running rich or not firing on one cylinder.

Re: Smoke & Oil leaks

The float that llfish referred to is the float in the float-bowl of the carburetor. It performs the same function as the one in the back of your commode. When the bowl is satisfactorily filled, the float closes the fuel inlet which is the needle valve. If either one is stuck, fuel will free-flow into the carb causing a rich mixture and possibly flooding. Does the smoke occur all the time or just at start-up?

Re: Smoke & Oil leaks

The smoke would occur pretty much just at the start-up but towards the end of the summer, it would also smoke abit while underway.

What also got me concerned was the oil leaking from under the exhauste and at idle the water spitting out from the exhauste would spot the water. Would that be gas or oil?
