i have recovered a 73 9.5 jonny outboard manual start. this engine was submerged in freshwater for about 6 hours last october and has not been touched since then. it is still in the garage sitting upright in the corner.i have not opened the engine up,to see what damage is inside yet. i was told it was a 2 pull starting engine, that ran very well and was reliable.is the engine worth repairing given its age and parts availabilty or passing on to a friend.

Age or parts availability are not the problem.
Its the lack of immediate attention after recovery, and the cost of those parts.

I would sell the lower unit, tiller, cowls, carb, etc, on ebay. Recycle the rest of it.

It might be do-able, but I think you will need to tear down the entire powerhead and inspect/replace too much.

Hi OMOTR,
If the motor had been properly taken care of after its dunking, then it would certainly be worth repairing and using. However, if it has been sitting since October with water inside and out in the open air, then it it likely junk at this point. As Roscoe pointed out, the whole motor isn't junk, but the heart of it likely is. The typical weak point on those motors is the lower unit, so you might be able to scrounge up a lower unit-less motor without too much trouble. This is a good time of year to hit the marinas, as they're usually not running full tilt and might be more willing to accomodate someone looking for 30+ year old stuff....

Go Steelers!

- Scott

Just as Chinewalker said, I have an early 80's evenrude 15 with a bad lower end. If the parts are compatible, I'd be willing to let you have it cheap.

Hi AaronG,
The 9.5 is a different animal from the later 9.9/15hp series...
- Scott

If the motor havn't siezed totally you could always try just cleaning the carb, change the plugs and start it. If you get it running until warm it's good again.
I did that to a 20 hp Johnson from 1972 and it served my for years after. Even had to knock the pistons loose in the bores with a rubber club and a lot of WD40.

AaronG, I have a lower unit for that motor. Will you sell? Been looking around for one on my brothers boat.
