Evinrude 15 hp can't pull start locked up and don't know the year

The motor was running fine with no problems. I went to take it out the other day and I could not pull start the motor it was stuck. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try to get this motor going again. <br /><br />P.S. if anyone knows the year of this motor it would also be appreciated the model number is 15404s and the serial number is s0008110<br /><br />Thanks in advance.

That's a 1974 engine you have there, Baitcaster.<br /><br />It may be the pullstart that is frozen. Remove the cover and see if you can turn the flywheel.<br /><br />Could be the gear train. What do you get if you put it in Neutral?<br /><br />If that doesn't work, remove the spark plugs and see if you can turn it. If still stuck look for water in the cylinders.<br /><br />Good luck.

I'm pretty sure those motors have a starter lockout so that you can't start it in gear. Are you sure you're in neutral? There should be a small lever in the front that pops up and down to engage small "ramps" on the top of the recoil spool.... If that lever isn't moving when you shift gears, then something has come undone...<br />- Scott

The red lever actually works off the throttle. If the throttle is advanced to far, a lobe on the armature plate pushes the red lever in against the recoil starter engaging one of the "ramps" Scott mentioned. Make sure the handle on the tiller handle is back at the "START" position.

Hi OBJ,<br /> On the very early 9.9/15 series, the "ramps" are on top of the rope spool and the catch is metal, located in the front of the motor, right next to the carb, but you're correct - it operates off the carb. It doens't have one of the red plastic deals that engage the side of the recoil spool as on the later models...<br />- Scott

Ok fellas shes definently locked in the pistons!The pull cord works properly when it engages to the flywheel she dont move it. I tried turn the prop in forwrd got nothing, Dont want to break the prop shaft. It goes to neutral the prop spins freely. Any advice on trying to free it? I put some mystery (little) oil in the plugs. I got a flywheel wrench but can not get it on the smaller flywheels.

Hi Baitcaster,<br /> Personally, I would do a complete teardown. All too often, a stuck motor has other internal issues to deal with. You could have a bad bottom seal that has allowed water into the bottom main bearing, or maybe the motor was inverted at some point and water entered through an exhaust port. In any case, the motor ought to be torn down and properly inspected/repaired, rather than simply brute forcing it free. Even if it does free up, a rusted bearing will likely fail in short order, causing much more damage in the process. If you can do the work yourself, those little 9.9s are well worth putting a little time into...<br /><br />- Scott

I was looking at buying A used powerhead pretty cheap and it has pretty good compression. So I better get to tearing down.<br /><br />Thank you very much for the advice!

Yep...you are right Scott....there's another thread dealing with the red lever.....guess I had red on the brain.....
