I just put a rebuilt powerhead on. The motor will turn over and hit but wont start. I took it to the shop and they said it might be a fuel problem and wanted alot to trouble shoot. I put sprayed some ether and it will start then go dead. I rebuilt the carbs and ran them before replacing the power head. I pulle the fuel line from the carb and turned the key its pumping fine. Power pack is ok and have a new timing base. Could this be a timing issue??? If so how do I set it ??
Thanks

Sounds like a fuel/carb problem. But I do know you'll need another powerhead if you continue to use the ether to run it.Mix some gas/oil and put it in a squirt-type oil can.

DHP

DON'T USE ETHER or starting fluid!!! Put some premix in a spray bottle and use that. Ether has no lubrication in it and you could ruin those new cylinders.

I will use that advice on the pre mix......As I undersand it if it hits like its starting with the premix the reeds are good..True or not..And as far as the carbs go I guess ill take em apart again and blow them out.

Reeds shouldn't be an issue unless there is something you aren't telling..???
Pull one of the drain plugs that give access to the main jets and see how much fuel runs out...that will tell you where to look when you remove the bowl.

fireman - Go to the FAQ. There is one dedicated to your problem. Whatever you do troubleshoot first and don't go throwing parts at it until you have an idea of the cause of the problem.

Re: 1977 evinrude 115 wont start

The bottom carb was not getting fuel. I took it off soaked it blew it out and now the boat runs. It does not seem to have all the power needed just by running with the water hose. To get the starter to engage I have to bump the key a bunch of times and it clicks. Dont know if its in the wiring or just the starter going bad. How can I check the timing?????
