Im glad I found this site lots of good information here. heres the story I bought a 17 foot cc bonito with a johnson 88 special and trailer from a customer of mine told me it ran aground and was hurting for money got it for $500.00. got it home cleaned it and started it ran ok but water was hot and a buzzer went off so I shut it down figuring it was a overheat alert. Found the prop shaft was bent and figured the water pump was bad. The question is a marina (Jeffs marina jax fl.) quoted me 5-600 $ to fix it with a used shaft if he could find one cost $100 new one would be 3-350$ how hard would it be to do myself and is it worth the money? Also every once in a while a guy advertises johnson lower unit installed for $275, sounds pretty good buit i'm lerry of this.
What should I look for if I go whit the $275 unit.

And I know I MUST GET THE MANUAL which one is the best for the 88 spcl I'v herd that not all contain the 88 spcl
modle is J88MSLCER figured its a 89??
thanks for the input

Re: new to forum have bent prop shaft question

Hello 86bonito and welcome to iboats.

Little priceing....Prop shaft new...say $400 (figure about half for used), lower unit seal kit about $60. Pump kit with new housing, say $58.

So your looking at about $300 to $500 to do the job your self.

Would it be worth it...my opinion...yes. The 88SPL's are good strong runners with a proven block. Even if ya' have to put some extra into it for carb rebuild and t-stats.

But I would go over the block also and check compression and ignition system also.

As far as the manual, get a OEM factory manual. It gives step by step instructions on your particular engine for maint., troubleshooting and care of the engine. Check the links below for factory reprint manuals.

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/johnson/order_pre-1980.html

http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

If you have any other question, just post.

And welcome again! Thanks.

Now there's a good idea. Probably any good machine shop could get the shaft straight and back in specs a bunch cheaper than a new one.

Re: new to forum have bent prop shaft question

Hi Bonito
The advice given above is exellent as usual. I agree with trying to have the shaft strightened. I have had this done several times with exellent results. Some times it can not be done depending upon were the bend is and how bad. Now, I'm not meaning to rain on your parade here, and add to OBJ's suggestion a little bit. As well as checking over the engine and ignit systems, etc. I also recomend that you carefully inspect the transome brackets, supension (isolaters), and exhaust housing leg. Look for bends, cracks and what not. This is because the motor was grounded enough to bend the prop shaft. I prefer the idea of over hauling the broken unit myself(or hiring it out) as opposed to installing something of unknown origin. This way you know what you've got. Maybe it's just me. I can't stand to install anything used with out a peek inside first.

Re: new to forum have bent prop shaft question

I think the person advertising lower unit's installed for $275 wouldn't do it for this engine. It's a more valuable lower. I sell quite a few OMC lowers for much less than this, but they are for older engines. Lowers that fit the newer, higher HP engines always bring more.

thanks for the replys and very usefull info after I order and study the manual I probably will crack the lower unit myself rather than hire it out.
