Hello Hello,
The motor is 1972 Johnson 100hp model number 100ESL72R, and i am having trouble finding an impeller / pump kit for it. Does anyone have any ideas on where to find this? It has been recommended by those in the forum, to replace the whole pump kit, and not just the impeller--any thoughts? A little off the subject, but easy for the pros, was this engine 100hp at the prop, or flywheel? Whats the difference?

Thanks Always

The whole pump is P/N 384465 from your local Johnny/Rude dealer. Mastertech wants $90 for it.

PS - the '73- V-4s have a different pump.

To answer your other question, that's a flywheel rated outboard. Expect a 2-5% drop compared to a prop-rated one.

With all due respect to DHadley (who deserves it), and many other pros here (who also deserve it), you may not need the full pump kit.

Not sure why it it often recommended to replace the entire pump housing, instead of just the impeller. I suspect that it's because the water pump is a critical part of an outboard, and 5 miles offshore that outboard may be an important part of your crew living a few more days (given that bigger 'modern' boats stupidly make no provision for oarlocks). However, not all V4s are run in life-or-death situations - for instance, skiing on lake in New Mexico.

Inspect the housing. If it's worn or scratched significantly, then replace it. If not, just replace the impeller.

I like ledgefinders plan. I make a ton of money each year repairing halfarsed repairs. at least most the bolts come out :) .

Thanks fellas!
I am getting freaked out over here on this thing. I called "The Johnny Guy" and he said "well with that electric shift, thats a little more than I like to work on, and a little older too." I understand if you screw up those wires than your screwed? Is it really that hard to tie a string and fish them back up? I want to do it myself, but if Ye ol jonny tech is scared to do it, than his fear is contagious to me now!! I have the wrong darn book too, but i imagine they have it here at Iboats?

Nervous in New Mexico,

p.s. Ledgefinder is right; you are lucky to even a find lake 5 miles long these days in NM.

There's no magic here - if you're replacing a perfect pump housing with another off the shelf, you're just going through the motions.
