I have a bit of a problem. I removed the power head from my 1971 Johnson 20 hp. Under the base or cradle that the power head sets on are 2 gaskets. An exhaust gasket (which I found) and another one. The other one is made of a foam and just found out that it's obsolete. First of all what is the purpose of that foam gasket. I know if it was there, it still has to be replaced. Second of all, does anyone have any ideas what I can use to make one? Did anyone ever have this problem? I was thinking about getting the foam strips with an adhesive backing, about 1/2" wide. And just forming it around the area where it was before. This stuff was used for insulation like around doors etc.

Oh yeah.....Both gaskets are sandwiched between the base or cradle and the mid section.

How did you determine it's obsolete? If the Johnson dealer can't get the part, try NAPA auto parts. They carry a lot of parts for older Johnsons and Evinrudes. Also, I've found that some dealers/mechanics are more helpful than others when it comes to hard-to-find/obsolete parts. So if at first you don't succeed...

Well the Johnson dealer told me it was obsolete. But I'll try Napa tomorrow. I have their Marine book, so I'll also take a look myself. Now what is the purpose of that foam gasket. I thought maybe to keep exhause gases from getting into the power head, Maybe?

Hi Bearcamp
The foam gasket is part#308292 Seal housing to cover. My book,a"93" shows this as available, but my book is some what dated now. Maybe OBJ will check his for you again. You are corect in assuming this gasket helps with some of the exhaust gasses. I think the main reason for this rascal is a buffer between the lower shroud pan and the exhaust housing. If this gasket is omited, or destroyed beyond reasonable use the motor shroud will rattle you nuts in short order. The main cause for damage to this seal is broken rubber mounts (isolaters). I have replaced two of these gaskets (seals) on different motors in the last year and half. I would not use weather strip foam. You need something fuel proof. I have also delt with many sorry attempts useing alterate substances by the owners of these motors. Off the top of my head I think I might try making a replacement from tool box drawer liner. This is only if the part is N/A and can't be reasonably had. I am sure there must be a dealer of obsolete parts on the east coast some where. If not call Seaway Marine in Seattle Wa.. If you do decide to make your own, make it with care and of good material. This will allow you to enjoy using this motor.

Ok....now that I'm on the same page.....that's the lower pan seal...yes it is PN 308292 and was unavailable in 04'. Last price was $10.34. You might try SeaWay Marine up in Washington State. They carry obsolete parts for John/Rudes. Here's there number:
1-800-332-0803.

WOW, never figured I'd get all this help. Thanks people. I did end up finding the gasket local. It was a little dusty but worked fine and the number was 308292. This dealer called it Cowling gasket and it's purpose is only to keep water out from the power head. Told me at factory they use rubber cement to install them, so that's how I did it. But here again thank you everyone for the help.
