Hi, I have a 1982 evinrude 25hp with a 1985 30hp powerhead . The prop is stuck in reverse. The shifter, mounted on the side of the engine, shifts to forward smoothly, but the prop always turns backwards as if in reverse. What do I need to do to fix this? I am new to outboard repair. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Johnny :)

Re: 82 25hp rude shift problems

The first thing is to get a good manual. I would suspect that whoever replaced the water pump impeller last did not get the shift rods connected correctly. There is a small brass (if I remember right) block that two rods connect in. I believe that they have one in too short or too long. If it is not a tiller handle then disconnect your shift cable and see if it will shift correctly by hand. If it does either adjust your cable (a small wheel on the cable by the engine) or you may need a new one.

Approximately half way down the exhaust housing (the housing between the powerhead and the lower unit, you'll see a plate which is retained by two screws.<br /><br />Remove that plate and you'll see the brass shift connector that Fireman57 has spoke of.<br /><br />It sounds like either the top or bottom shift rod has pulled out of that connector.

Problem Solved! Thanks to everyone for their help. Shifter is again working smoothly. It had worked loose at the connector in the exhaust mid-section. I do have another problem if anyone can help. One of the motor mounts is broken. The bolt has broken off even with the top of the mount. Is there anyway to change it out without tearing the motor down? I can't seem to find a way to get at the back mounting bolt. Thanks again for your help.

If you lay the motor on its back ( spark plug end ) you should be able to loosen the upper three mounts and pull the bracket long enough forward to get to the bad mount. ( assuming its one of the side mounts. You might as well replace both as they stiffen up with age. Note the center mount nut is hidden deep in the bracket in front, under lower cowl. I put heavy greese on the socketto hold nut, when putting nut back with a socket and extention bar.

Hello guys, once again your tips have helped me solve a problem. The motor mounts are out and new ones are ready to be installed. I checked for the center mount nut, and it wasn't even there. I will put a new one on tomorrow. Thanks G DANE for the grease tip. I'm sure it will help with putting the nut on. Thanks again for your suggestions. <br />Let's go fishin'<br />Regards, Johnny :D
