This is a 3-cylinder '79 'rude 70, model 70973, electric choke (not the primer), Type I carbs (according to Seloc).

Running on the muffs, I found fuel leaking from the backside of the fuel filter housing. Engine off, it squirts out when I squeeze the bulb. Looks like there's a hole there but what the ?????

I don't know what it's supposed to look like. Seloc manual is no help not even pictures of the disasembled filter housing.

I got no symptoms, just doing a little mid-winter check in case we got another 80 degree weekend this month & noticed a film of gasoline on everything in the vicinity. Starts right up, runs smooth, plugs look good, plenty of power last time out (end of December).

Fuel intake is in the front & center of the housing with a thumbscrew, two outlet hoses, one leads to a junction that feeds the carbs, one appears to go to the intake manifold south of the carbs.

Six screws hold the housing together - do I take it apart? Will I need gaskets for reassembly - looks like maybe form-a-gasket or something.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

jtw

I assume you're talking about the fuel pump?

If so, yes, you will need a new gasket. Plus, be warned, there are little tiny springs in there too. Be very careful on disassembly.

Since you will have it apart, just rebuild using a rebuild kit.

Thanks, DJ, that was quick! This dangol'dangol' Seloc manual has a pic of the part with an arrow pointing to the "FUEL PUMP FILTER", duh, but I didnt' make the leap to assume that the actual FUEL PUMP itself was inside. D'OH! Don't sound too hard, though.

THANKS!!

jtexas,

The "thumb screw" holds the "screen" in place.

The screen is on top of the fuel pump.

Got that far at least, removed the unit cause the boat had to go back to the storage yard.

my favorite vendor, iboats, doesn't have '79 70hp listed; couple other sites, also no part number. You wouldn't happen to know which of these if any I should get, would you? The part no. for 1982-1984 70hp crops up a lot for my vintage of other size motors (no. 18-7820).

here's the page

Now if you'll just place the order, pay & have it sent to:

:) just kiddin'

I'm starting to feel like such a whiner - thanks for the help!

[edit] never mind, identified it from the pic.

Okay, had to put it together twice since I forgot gasket sealer the first time, but now it's good like new!

thanks,
jtw

p.s. here's a couple notes to anybody else doing this for the first time:
* the gas leaks through that hole in the back of the pump because there's a hole in the diaphram.
* the two hoses exiting though the bottom: one obviously is fuel feed to carbs, the other provides the vacuum.
* use gasket sealer where the first gasket meets the metal back plate of the pump. Might be obvious (but it wasn't to me, d'oh!) since it's the only place where gasket gets stuck.
* where the Seloc manual has a picture of your fuel pump & says "this is the throw-away pump used on some 3-cylinders" just ignore that - the rebuild works fine.
* I used loc-tite (blue) on all the screws because it felt like it was on there when I took 'em out.
