I'd soak and heat and work with the existing head you still have left with vise grips or pump pliers until the head breaks or they come loose. If you grind em off, you still have the same issue with a smaller shaft. At that point I would cut em flush, center drill, drill, and use an extractor. Either way, a good soaking with Kroil or PB Blaster, and a judicious use of heat will be needed (along with prayers and libations).
Good luck

Re: tear down 50 horse 1974 evi

I second the vice grips. That is to say, Vice Grip brand locking pliers (cheapies never seem to work for me). Sometimes I file flats into the bolts so I can get a better grip. Then propylene, penetrating oil, and patience. You'll need to save your cursing for when the bolt head breaks.

Nowadays I'll weld a little handle onto the top of the bolt in these cases, and grind it off once the bolt has been broken loose. If thats an option, I suggest you try it.

I've got doubts about the epoxy. It's going to be really hard for it to get a grip on the bolt since there's little to key to.

Those bolts are a pain in the neck to get at. Good luck with them!

Re: tear down 50 horse 1974 evi

Last time I delt with bolts looking like those, I ended up standing on the underside of the flywheel with the outboard upsidedown and supported by the midsection beating on the remaining studs of the hold down bolts that had chosen to snapped off. Darn white death-grip stuff...

PS - I also found a new way to remove the flywheel.

Good luck, and if it's any consolation most of the bolt studs came out of the block easily enough w/ penetrating oil, vice grips and heat.

reeldutch
welcome to salt water :) :)
did you remove the nut from the stud at the aft center ofthe powerhead?
but if the bolt shanks are stuckin the powerhead adapter then your only option is to cutthe bolt.
how I do it is drawa vertical line upthe bolt to the baseof the power head. carefully center punch and drillhorizontally through the adaptor and the bolt. if your careful it wont damage anyting and the rest of the bolt you can remove later from the block andadapter. my space bar is dying :) :)

If you do end up flipping it, thread a couple long bolts partly into the powerhead hold down bolt holes you did get out. That way when the engine drops it doesn't go far.

Re: tear down 50 horse 1974 evi

hello
go under the cyl head under the powerhead adapter and you will see a nut. its at the aft end of the block pointing down. use a long shanked 1/2" box end. its a wolly booger to get to but its there. but dont go twisting and flipping the motor. takes 10 min to cut the broken bolts with a drill. if you dont like the hole it left, wont hurt anything, have it welded back up when your done.
but if you try to force the powerhead off and the nut is not off the stud there is a good chance of breaking off the aft end of the adapter. the stud nut is almost the same location as the two aft power head studs on the 90 v4.

Re: tear down 50 horse 1974 evi

Are you talking about the power head is stuck to the adapter? If so, I had a simliar problem. It took me 4 hours of prying and beating to get them apart on my 1974 Johnson. After tearing the engine down I found out why it was stuck. The lower crankshaft bearing was shot, thus causing a heating problem at the lower end of the crankshaft. After 31 years, the heat and rust combo caused the splined shaft to really be stuck into the crank. If you can pry it apart a little bit, spray some penetrating oil in there.

Re: tear down 50 horse 1974 evi

i got it,

thanks rodbolt.
i cut the studs and then i put the outboard inbetween 2 trees and used a flywheelpuller to connect a hoist and tied the midsection with ropes to a other tree.
i started cranking the hoist and it didnt come of easy i heatet the adapter and last thing i did i used a crowbar to push the stud in the rear and that did the trick.

happy its off now its time to start cleaning that baby.
oh boy she will look prety when shes done.

thanks again.
