Thanks R.Johnson, I'll take a look under the flywheel. I have some experience with the old magneto ignition systems and the newer CD2 ignition systems, but I've never touched anything like this before.

Steve

Re: Starter dragging. 1971 Evinrude 60.

I went to take the flywheel off today, but when I had a look, it seems this engine doesn't have the battery CD ignition! It looks like 3 coils and a stator under there. I didn't pull the flywheel because I'm hoping I can trouble shoot the ignition system without taking it off.

The trouble is, the OEM manual that I've got only covers the battery CD ignition system, so I've got to check out the Seloc manual, but I don't know what year this ignition system is from.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Steve

Sounds more like a 72'and later ignition system Steve. Can you tell if it's got a timer base.....there will be an arm coming from under the flywheel that that is connected to the throttle arm with a link. And the coils and pack may be mounted on a "rack".

Yes OBJ, it's got a timer base. I can see the arm that you mentioned, and yes, the coils and pack are mounted on a rack. The model number for this engine is 60173C.

Thanks
Steve

Yep....book says 71'. Someone before ya' musta' changed off the ignition system. Did ya' get the model number from the little plate on the transom hanger or off the block?

Re: Starter dragging. 1971 Evinrude 60.

I got it from the transom bracket. See where you're going here. I'll check the number on the block tomorrow.

I've looked in the Clymer manual at trouble shooting the CD3 system and it says i need a neon tester. I don't have one of those, but I do have a DVA peak reading multimeter. Can I trouble shoot it with one of those?

Thanks
Steve

Yep ya' can Steve. Fact it's better than a neon tester.

That's good OBJ, but my manual only details the tests with the neon tester! I don't know how to trouble shoot with the DVA meter! Any ideas?

By the way, I checked the model number on the block and it's 65273S , which means the powerhead is from a 1972 65hp I think.

Thanks.
Steve

Yep....72' head, 65hp. Don't know the numbers for troubleshooting right off the top of my head Steve. Maybe one of the other guys can jump in and tell you. I'll take a look tomorrow anyways and see what kind of "stuff" I can come up with.

Thanks OBJ.
Are the resistance tests reliable? I was just thinking that I could be doing those whilst trying to find out the voltage numbers for the other tests.

Steve

Resistance test are reliable with a good meter. If the coil is really burnt out, you will tell right away.

Apologies Steve for not getting the info ya' need today. Got caught up with an engine brought in from the local fire department. Their boat flipped in the last flood and they just got around to bringing it in. I got a note to get the info tomorrow at all costs....... :D :D

Thanks OBJ. I really appreciate your help.

Isn't that just like Firemen? Give them any piece of equipment to play with, and they will either lose it or break it ;o) ;o)

Steve

Had same troubles many times on different motors. You should just go buy a new set of brushes for the starter. They may look good and clean. But they aren't giving the juice to the starter. Cheap easy fix.

Re: Starter dragging. 1971 Evinrude 60.

Looks like a sensor problem. Had good voltage from the charge coil, nothing from the pack to coils and nothing from the sensor coils to the pack.

Thanks for the help.
Steve
