Re: 1989 40hp Evinrude questions

If the engine is in fact a 89' 40 hp it calls for the Champion QL78YC plugs gapped at .030".Fuel mixture on the non vro is 50:1 using TCW3 oil.If not recently performed,I recommend changing the lower unit oil with the recommended lube. This will give you an oportunity to inspect the condition of the lube for water or milky color, which would indicate a leaking seal.Same with the waterpump and thermostat assy.If you can't verify that they have been serviced within the last couple of years,I recommend either replacing them yourself with the help of a manual, or having it done.

You'll also want to make sure that whatever boat this engine is to be used on that the engine is propped to be capable of its recommended wide open throttle operating range.

That electrical socket intrigues me. I have an 89 50 & can't imagine what it is unless its the switch for the trim motor (and the switch has fallen apart or something like that) or the fuel connection.

What side is it on? A pic would definitely help as rodbolt mentioned.

It is definitely electrical.Facing the motor,it is mid-ways on the left side and just under the rim where the cover goes.
The model # BE40BACEC said something about "AC Lighting" when I looked it up on another site.

Definitely a different model than mine. Sounds like it's about in the same place as my tilt switch. "AC Lighting" possible accesory lighting (running/anchor light maybe). Is there a switch nearby to turn it on and off.

With the model number I'm sure the experts will figure it out for you. Hold tight & they be here.

Re: 1989 40hp Evinrude questions

My owners manual mentions an AC lighting circuit w/ the connector in the lower cover. They weren't on engines made for US or Canadian market.
The BA after the 40 means AC lighting-Rope Start according to the model code info sheet I have.
The B at the front means it was made in Belgium.
