My neighbor just bought a used boat last week, I saw him backing it into his yard, so I went over to congratulate him on the purchase. Has 50 HP J/E engine of some vintage). The guy he bought it from was there too. He told me it had been all serviced just before he put it up for sale. So, I thought I would ask the pertinent questions knowing that my nieghbor new nothing about boats.

Was the gear lube changed? Yes.

Was the water pump changed? I Dunno.

When was the last time you changed it? I Dunno.

Was the fuel pump changed? I Dunno.

When was the last time you changed it? I Dunno.

Were the plugs changed? Suppose to have been.

So I went and got a flat blade scewdriver and came back and showed them how to check the gear lube, and it was black.

I told my nieghbor that if he would drain it that I would come over and fill it for him (Free), if he would let me know and that if he needed help with the waterpump and the fuel pump to let me know and I would be glad to lend a hand.

Sense then I know that he has had the boat out in the bay twice. and I know that he has not addressed any of the problems.

Well, I tried.

I find the same attitude among many boaters. I guess most boaters are weekend warriors in terms of maint. Meaning its the weekend, no time for maint. Lets roll!

Talked to a gal with a Bayliner/inboard she inherited. Nice looking boat. She took it out in Tampa Bay.... broke down, caught on fire..... had to be towed back. The string cost her $500, don't know how expensive the fire was yet. She never bothered to become a member of SeaTow or BoatUS. Sad.

My Dad has an early 90's Johnson 115 that has the origional impeller in it. It sat unused for 6 or so years, step sister used it this summer.

I asked my dad if he planned to change it now that the lake by where he lives has water now, the answer was that it still pumps good. Oh well, its a small lake, hopefully he can get a tow back to his dock.

Re: You can tell them, But.

twidget
yepget it once a week or so. always pumped good before. in the past 30years I have stumbled on a remakable find. takes 1 1/2 hours to change a pump on most v4-v6 jonny rudes( to include cutting off the old impeller and fighting the trim tab bolt and the 7/1ths bolt just fwd of the tab :) ) the pump costs about 50 bucks.
pistons, bearings, boring, new t-stats recirc valves new VRO and carb kits takes about 25 hours and parts are about 1800 dollars. the amazing find is the time and the cost of the pump remained the same with or without the pistons :) :_).
pay me now pay me later, your choice I aint the maytag man :)
