Monterey boat owners?

ok... this isn't a mid life crisis thing, it's about fuel economy and how much time I have to go boating. My 26' Tolly was a great boat but it's time for a change. It was expensive (thirsty) to run up on plane so I cruised around at displacement speeds (7 or 8 mph)... meaning I was always the last one into port. I got tired of that. I sold her and I'm replacing it with this today. It's a 1994 27' Monterey. 7.4 Volvo / duoprop. It cruises @ 28 and tops out over 40. Any other Monterey owners out there?
Re: Monterey boat owners?

I spoke too soon :(
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
This morning's survey on the hull found a dozen areas of delamination and some soft spots along the chines. There was also an area on the transom he wasn't 100% sure of either. He started to 'tap out' the decks and found a few more up top so I told him to stop. I withdrew my offer. Here's a good example of how a survey can save your backside! It looks like new so I actually considered not getting a survey to save a few bucks... good thing I decided to get one anyways.
I'll never buy a boat without a survey now for sure.
The search continues...

I'll bet you're relieved!

That could have been a disaster.

Great job of planning ahead. Money well spent, wouldn't you agree?

What caused the delamination? Did the owner not do any maintenance, or is it just from a poor manufacturing processes?

Re: Monterey boat owners?

The surveyer said it could have come from the manufacturer pulling the hull out of the mould while it was still green, maybe moisture in the air lines during the resin spraying or impact/crack/water infiltration/rot depending on the core (foam or wood). He was surprised somewhat but has 'seen it all' (quote). The 'soft spots' are just plain old bad news. I could push lightly with my pinky and move the gel coat a good 1/8 inch.

Were the soft spots visible as such to the eye at all?

Kelly

No, not really. They were soft spots more so than a blistered area. I said an 1/8" but if I pushed harder I coud've moved it further. That was just light pressure.

Thanks for the reply magster65. I've also heard of tapping the hull with a quarter to look for voids.

Kelly
