I PURCHASED THIS MOTOR AND BOAT FROM MY NEIGHBOR WHO NEVER CHANGED ANYTHING ON THIS MOTOR. HIS THINKING IS WHY FIX IT IF IT IS NOT BROKE. I HOOKED IT UP TO WATER AND RAN THE MOTOR AND IT RUNS FINE. SHOULD I CHANGE THE WATER PUMP AND HOW HARD IS THAT TO DO OR SHOULD I JUST LET IT BE? THATS ONE OLD WATER PUMP. HELP FRANK

The waterpump is one item that you do fix before it's broke. The impeller takes a set after a spell and the cup gets worn as well.I recommend repalcing with a new pump kit.If you don't have an engine specific manual ,I'd get me one.Just follow the procedures for the pump replacement. Not a hard task. That is, if the driveshaft ain't froze up in the crank splines.Make sure you clean em and apply a little grease when you service the pump.

I recall on my 115 of that vintage that the lower unit bolts were frozen into place after years of neglect in salt water. Torching and whatever got three out (as best I recall). One was twisted off and had to be chiseled out and retapped. Not fun!

I would see if you can loosen the bolts first. If so, do the impeller. If not, let her ride on! (just be monitoring water pressure or whatever you watch)

The water pump is sorta like a tetanus shot, If you can't remember or don't know when the last one was its time for a new one. A few broken bolts are a lot cheaper to fix than a scorched engine. Mine is saltwater motor and I change my waterpump annually. It may not need it but I never have any siezed bolts either.

THE LOWER UNIT BOLTS DON'T LOOK THAT BAD SO THEY WILL HOPEFULLY LOOSEN WITH NO PROBLEM. I ALREADY DRAINED THE GEAR LUBE AND THAT WAS BLACK AS COAL. THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO. HAPPY FISHIN FRANK

I have a 76 115 sitting on the ground in my back yard, Awsomely tough and reliable motor, the corrosion just got too bad, the water pump for that motor will be expensive and difficult to track down as it has two tubes up into the motor but you should be able to get one. You also might want to think about adding a tell tale to show that water is pumping. Good Luck

Re: 1976 115 HP JOHNSON SEAHORSE WATER PUMP

i havent ran my boat in a while due to relocating. i finally got her home and began to do some maintance on her. i put some rabbit ears on her and started her up. first of all how do you know if the waterpump is pumping? i saw the two holes that look like the water should be circulating back out of, but not much is happeing. secondly as i was running her all of a sudden a loud buzzing noise started coming from my shifter. I immediatly associated it with being somekind of warning device that my motor was overheating. is that correct? i have never heard of this. thirdly how hard is it to replace that waterpump myself? Thx for any advice you can offer!!!

Running on a set of muffs will cover up a defective water pump, the water pressure will bypass a defective impeller.
You should invest in an OEM manual for your engine, it will ansewer a lot of questions and give you step by step instructions to trobleshoot and repair your engine.
