I was just looking at your pictures of your boat motor and was wandering what the two brass elbow fittings just below the coil in this picture are? Thanks.

Re: Question for Indymike?

Thats kind of what I suspected. I know you probably installed yours while your engine was apart, but is it possible to install this with out removing the power head?

Sure is. The boss I drilled and tapped is accessible without any problems. Just pay attention to what you are doing. Don't go too deep. Slow and steady wins the race here.

Do a search on block venting and it will bring up some additional posts from others much more qualified than I to steer you in the right direction.

Re: Question for Indymike?

Here is another question for you. I noticed you were talking about what position to set the tach at (on back of tach) on another thread.
My question is this, what do you have your tach set on, 6 or 4?
Thanks.

Re: Question for Indymike?

Hey BassCat,

I have my tach set to 4P setting. I have not verified the tach with a shop tach or the speedo with a gps though.
Doing the math it appears to be close but I have to work through the set up. Current set up is about as dirty as can be. No T/T , cheap 17P aluminun prop. AV plate even with hull bottom. With this prop I can tach well over 6000 rpm. I need to get to a prop shop to get this worked thru.

(edit)setting 4 is incorrect. proper setting is 6

Re: Question for Indymike?

Thanks Mike for the reply, however I am now confused about something. I have a 1974, 85 hp Johnson, and if I am not mistaken I have the same stator that you pictured here, but I have my tach set on 6-P as I was directed to do sometime back. Should I have mine set on 4P too? As it is now, at WOT I am getting 5300 rpms.
Kid, welcome to iboats.
You need to start your own thread asking what year your engine is as not to confuse anybody.
Thanks.

Re: Question for Indymike?

Mike after researching this, I looked in my OMC manual and it does say that my alternator stator windings has 8 poles. You are correct. I will need to switch my tach to the 4P setting.

Re: Question for Indymike?

Basscat, When I first installed my tach I blindly follow the directions from teleflex. In an email from them they said setting 4 for an 8 pole stator.
(edit)
6 is the correct setting.

Re: Question for Indymike?

Interesting thread... I've got a similar motor to you guys (BC & IM), a '76 Johnson 85hp. According to my tach, I've only been able to get 4800 out of my motor even though it seems spinning quite fast. I'm pretty sure I set mine at the 6 position. Though, Indy, you're correct, there are only 8 poles in the stator.

I've been frustrated for some time now that my RPM seemed low with what I would think is an appropriate pitch prop (19p on 17' aluminum boat). I even raised the motor as high as possible which didn't help much. This thread has got me intrigued... I'm tempted to go outside right now with a flashlight and pull the cover to look under dash. On second thought, I guess I can wait till tomorrow (if I can sleep :) ) This is good news, if you guys are right, I'm probably going over 6000. In that case, I can get a bigger prop and go FASTER.

Oh, by the way Mike, I like your paint job. Is that Pontiac Metallic Blue engine paint? If so, thats the color I painted my GTO engine. Nice job you done.

How is your boat project coming? Have you had it out since rebuilding the hull and engine?

Re: Question for Indymike?

Boat is great! Hull handles well motor runs good.
Still some things to do with the hull...paint maybe, probably build a fore and aft fishing deck.
Motor has an idle problem after running in gear for a while though. Not that it wont idle but that it idles too fast. I think this is a combination of worn linkage and throttle cable. Set up is my focus now in that I'm turning way too many R's and the slip seems way high.I have some proofs to do verify the numbers like I said earlier. Neat thing is that the my problems are on the positive side. This one is practice and I am having a good time with it. It's amazing what you can learn by starting from scratch on a project like this. I need to update my journal too.

Thats the truth, but it gives me something to do.
The throttle linkages was a problem with mine too. I completely rebuilt the controller (moving parts) and put in a new throttle cable. All of that makes a difference.
They say, you are never satisfied with your boat, and I believe that is true. I am always tinkering with mine and making small changes. I changed my tach to 4P yesterday, but I have not had the boat out on the lake yet. Before I changed it, on the muffs the idle was 1000 rpms, but after it was 1200.
I am glad to hear you got it back together and having fun at it.
