Hi all I'am still not sure on this model # FDL12 don'nt match this motor almost positive it should be FDL21 but now thats not the only mystery my transom is 20in. from top to bottom my motor is 23 1/2in. from where it sits on the transom to the cavitation plate so the plate is 3 1/2in below the bottom of the transom I measured the motor several times today .

Re: 1967 ? mystery motor

That's pretty typical on those old OMCs that the cav plate will end up far below the bottom of the hull if mounted on a standard transom. My 28hp (which is handy) measures 18.5" and it is a 15" engine. I belive they did this to get the water pump further down into the water since those ones wern't very good at drawing. You may realize some significant performance gains if you raise your engine up and inch or two - just make sure you still pump water at idle an in neutral.<br /><br />A '67 would have a fiberglass cowl while a '58 (FD-12) would be entirely metal. Does the serial number on your swivel bracket match the one on the engine? If not, perhaps the swivel bracket has been replaced with one scavanged off an older engine. <br />We've seen some clearly misprinted OMC labels here occasionally though. Best bet is to go over to The Old OMC Site and try to identify it visually. We might be able to do something with the Welsh Plug serial number too.

Those old engine's did not come with the prop technology we have today. They had to be sunk deep into the water to function with out slipping. You never heard of CUP, RAKE, ETC. today! I dought if you could find a performance prop for these older engines. You can run these engine's higher on the transom without water pick-up problems. Finding a prop that would let you would be the problem.

Sounds like it the ol' plate stamper at OMC might have been on a bender the night before and couldn't see straight. :) Like I said before, it seems to me I've seen this happen a couple times here. Very rare though. Just out of curiosity, what is your S/N?<br /><br />You might have some luck finding a prop on ebay with some decent performance features since those style engines were raced once upon a time. They might be too high a pitch though.

Sorry about that, I didn't realize I had already run that S/N for you last August. I think you can be certain FD-12 is a mis-print and it is in fact a '67.
