Hi,
i Have a 1975 evinrude 115 on a 1966 slickcraft. ( i think a 16ss? ) Anyway, it goes pretty well but has an issue. When I try to start it cold it won't fire. I have to take the cowl off and spray fuel into the carb. After it has run for a minute or so it will refire all day as long as it doesn't sit 1 hour or more. I rebuilt the carbs and installed a new fuel pump. The solenoid on the choke is working fine. Any ideas? Also, what was the difference in the 135 from the 115 in 1975? I would love a bit more power for this boat as I love to water ski but weigh around 275. Thanks!!

Okay, the choke solenoid works, but did you check to see if it was closingn the butterflies all the way? May need adjusting.

Cold starting problems are very common on the 1973-77 V4s. Search the archives for discussions. The choke flaps have to slam 100% shut, put the idle throttle lever all the way forward, etc..

I'll give the choke a look and see if they are gettign shut all of the way. Any info on the 135 / 115 difference?

The 135 has an exhaust tuner, different pistons, and I think slightly different ports & heads. Same size carbs. I doubt you'd notice the difference, unless your boat is really light.

Instead, try lifting the motor on the transom as high as it'll go; until you lose bite on corners, and or water pressure. If the holes for the motor were drilled with the motor sitting right down on the transom, you'll want to be on the next to the last highest position (VERY rough guess - you'll have to check how your boat runs). This is worth about 4mph on a light 16-footer.

Forgot to re-read your post. If you're interested in skiing better, forget about lifting the motor. Also, forget about putting on 135 parts - the 115 has more midrange balls than the 135, and will start a skier easier.

I weigh around 245, and had a 1975 115 Johnson (same motor) on a light Larson 16-footer. It'd pop me up on one ski without straining; same with my brother in laws, who are both even heavier.

Check your prop. You'll want a 17" pitch (no more than that if you're having trouble skiing). If it's already 17" (I doubt it), let's check the compression on that motor.

I didn't realize that the warm up lever needed to be all of the way up. The bottom choke flap was open about 1/64 inch. I adjusted it shut, pulled the lever all of the way up and it fired. Thanks!
