I have a '61 Evinrude Fastwin 18hp that 2 summers ago started and ran perfectly until I tried to go beyond trolling speed. That's when it starts to bang and clunk like its jumping out of gear. Afriend took apart the lower unit---we replaced some worn gears, replaced the gasket, and got the unit in ship-shape. Still clunked! We then replaced a burnt out coil, thinking we had it solved. Still clunked! My friend thinks it must be in the upper unit somewhere and something he didn't have time for. Basically, I can't afford a new motor. What could it be and is it worth takng in to a shop? Please help. Thanks

If it feels like you are hitting something under water then it probably is a bad clutch dog. Was everything replaced in the lower unit? All installed properly? Do you have a manual?

Did you replace the clutch dog and yoke? That sounds like the problem and you didn't meantion replaceing it in the original repair.

It does feel like I'm hitting something. I do have a manual and my friend John thought the clutch dog was alright. Is that an expensive repair if I have it replaced? I'm definetely confidant in John's expertise. He had just got rid of his tanks and equipment so he is pretty much retired from working on motors. Thanks for the feedback! I just got layed off today so I have lots of time to fish but a definate lack of funds :(

Repair is not that difficult especially since you have a manual and someone with some mechanical expertise. Price the dogs at your local dealer. They shouldn't be that high. Hope your luck with the job gets better and you catch lots of fish.

Sometimes just replacing the gears with the worn lobes is not enough dipple. If the gear lobes are good but the dog lobes are wore, it can still slip in and out of gear. One way to find out is to hold the gear shift lever on the motor and get underway. You will be able to feel the thing jump if it is the gears jumping out.
