I have a 1976 55 hp Johnson seahorse and i just bought a used johnson throttle control unit with key ignition that works. when i turn the key all i get is a click in the solenoid but the starter does not engauge. when i trip the solenoid it engauges the starter. I have never tried to start the motor with a ignition switch because i never had one till now. so i was woundering why the starter may not be engauging by the ignition and if it is a solenoid problem or not.

pstyle25,

Your symptoms fit the scenario of a suspect connection.

My first look would be at the negative battery cable where it attaches to the engine block. Take it off and clean it up, including the bolt threads.

Not an uncommon issue with Johnny/Rudes.
