98- 225 johnson dieing when engauging gear

just bought triton w/ 98 228 johnson , boat ran great , cranked up to come in , motor would start but die when put in gear , my wife noticed saftey lanard on kill switch was altered but not completley off ,reattached & we were on our way. Got to ramp ,went to get truck ( wife can't back trailer ) got in boat to drive on trailer , boat kept shutting off when I put it in gaer. could motor still run with kill switch partialey on? jonr@erwinutilities.com

My guess is that the carburetor linkage is out of adjustment.Not sure if your engines carbs have idle mix screws,but if so,they may need adjusting.If all of that checks out fine,your carburetor/s may be fouled.I don't feel your lanyard kill switch and your engine dying when put into gear issue are related.

A malfunctioning or poorly adjusted switch interrupt switch could cause your problems.
