There's no power to the power pack. I put in a new power pack and still no power. No power from the coil either. Have any ideas on what is wrong. Thanks for any help.

Re: Evinrude 40HP 1985 no spark help

Welcome to iboats.

Could be a bad ignition switch or dead-man switch. I believe that remote control used a rubber cap over the switch that kills the motor if it's pulled off. The rubber stretches over time and doesn't push the plunger in far enough. Replacements are plastic forks.

Otherwise it could be a bad ground connection, bad stator under the flywheel, bad trigger, broken wire, etc.

Thank you for the welcome. I'm going to try to replace the regulator/rectifier first. Hope it works =)

Buy a factory manual to guide you with troubleshooting first. If you just start replacing parts you will end up spending a ton of money and still not have it fixed. The maual will give you a systematic way to find the problem. You have to find the problem before you can fix it.

Replacing the regulator/rectifier will do no good. These are charging system parts and have nothing to do with the ignition system. The engine will run without them. As was suggested, make sure the kill switch and ignition switches are working before spending large bucks needlessly. Your first purchase should be a service manual.
