I've got a 79 140 Johnson V4 cross-flow. When running the water coming out the "pee" hole is cold, but when the rpm's increase the water is boiling hot. The previous owner said the thermostats stick from time to time. Should I replace the thermostats and if so how do I get to them? Thanks.

its always a good id to replace the tstats.
especialy if they havent bin serviced for a while.
i think yours is a bubbleback right?
if so its a real pain in the b.. to change them but it can be done.
the hardest part is to get to the 3 bolts that hold the housing.
i made 3 holes in the lowerpan to get the bolds out.
there are plenty of posts about that job so do a search and youl get all the answers youl need.

I agree with reeldutch as I have a couple of 1.6 L crossflows. You will need a 1/4" drive socket with a universal and an extra long extension + a 7/16" socket + a 7/16" box wrench. Best to take off the rear plastic piece just below the pan and come up from below to get started. I use rubber bands to hold the assembly together when reinstalling. When the bolts are started clip the rubber bands.

Have you changed the water pump? The deflectors?
