Hello good peoples,
I could use some expertise about now. I know there is an abundance within this forum so I look forward to your assistance.

I think the motor is an 1980, it's a 6 hp evinrude. It starts and runs smooth. It runs great in neuatral, and will only idle in gear. If you attempt to open it up it will pick up very little then the engine dies. I am guessing carb problems? I dont know, I am a diesel master not a two-stroke genius.
Thanks for your help.
DJB

Plugs are good, I checked the entire fuel system over today. Used some carb cleaner on it, I think there may be a problem with the choke mechanism..any thoughts? Thanks for the advice..

Did you actually pull the carburetor apart or just clean the outside and the throat? A proper carb cleaning requires a COMPLETE disassembly of the carb. The choke is about as simple as it gets, and if it opens and closes with the knob, it's working. Your symptoms sound like carb issue...
- Scott

Chinewalker..thanks for the reply. yes I am going to go through the entire carb after I find a kit and obtain a manual for it.

The choke is actually a plastic cylinder looking thing with fuel lines attached to it..

Thanks for your help

If your motor has the cylinder dealie, then it's later than a 1980. Probably late 1980s. I see now that you've got it as a 1988 in another post. It's easy enough to check to see if the primer is working. Remove the one hose that runs from the pump to the intake manifold and operate the primer. If it squirts a bit of fuel, it's working.

- Scott

Chinewalker,
Well the model number is E6RCCS..I thought that translated to 1980 using the "introduces" acronym. But someone told me 1988..trying to figure where I went wrong with getting the date of the engine..

Not knowing how to read the drawings for full and open choke I was running it in the middle. Everytime I opened it all the way up(the choke, pulling outward) it would make the engine run better but it would slowly suck back in after a while of running the motor.

I am an excellent electrical troublshooter and good with diesel engine theory..just lost my touch on two stroke, and know nothing about boat engines..

Thanks again for the advice..

Hi
Pulling the choke knob out closes the choke(cold start possition).
You need to pull the carb from the motor and give it a full clean, a dam good soak with carb cleaner and use an air line to blow out all of the ports,DO NOT use anything metal to poke thru the ports.
Best of luck
RPJS.

Take this info for what it might be worth . I had an 80's model Evinrude 6 , don't remember the
exact year or model . It was the first outboard
I ever toredown , they are pretty simple . A couple of things to look for , some models had a tendency to blow the head gasket , jerk the head
and have a replacement gasket ready ( the new ones have a metal ring which surrounds the cylinder - much better ) inspect cylinders , clean heads . Clean the carb , also their is a set of points under the flywheel which may need
attention . It can be hard to pull the wheel,
you may need some help here . These are three common problems . If your model is different than mine was, or one of the pro's wants to correct me I stand down . These are all easy
fix's .

The year is determined from the "CC" portion of your model number. C=8, therefore it's a 1988. As you noted, your motor does not have a choke, rather it uses a primer. Your motor does NOT have points, so disregard Tailfin's note on that. Also, it uses a metalic reinforced head gasket and they rarely blow out. Not unheard of, but if compresion is good, it's probably okay.
You're on the right track with getting a rebuild kit and going through the carb thoroughly...
Good luck!
- Scott

I am in great appreciation to all of you.
This site has to be the best I have ever encountered for trusty assistance. I am currently procuring a manual and the carb kits, while I am at it, I plan to do the L/U seal kit and replace the impeller, since I hit a log and reverse stopped working, I imagine I will have to teardown anyhow..after reading the manual of course..

I found a manual for 45 dollars, I think that is a little more than most places..Is the evinrude manual better than the clymer?

Thanks again to you all..very helpful..I am sure we will be seeing each other again as I have begun to enjoy the pains of boating.
SF

The factory manual is far more valuable than the Clymers. It's definitely worth the extra $.
You can purchase reprints from the following on-line retailers:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook
(They all ultimately come from kencook.com, so the prices don't differ much)
Also, I see a couple used ones on ebay - not much savings but they're a couple bucks cheaper:
Auction 1
Auction 2.

Good luck!

Get it running good first then worry about your reverse. I'm betting that when you hit the log it just knocked something out of adjustment. Should be a fairly simple fix. Could be a simple as it pulled your shift rod in the lower unti linkage out a tad. If you do end up pulling the lower unit to check this change the impeller while you are there. Like I said, get it running first.

Re: 6 hp evinrude, boggs down and dies when throttling up in gear

Good evening Fellow Mariners,
I have ordered the manual, carb kit, lower unit seal kit and impeller, fluids and grease for a full PM, and a fuel pump rebuild kit.
I wanted to order a new primer choke but couldnt find on any of the sources I was using.
I will get everything late this week, and check back in on my progress. Thank you for your help and advice.
Very gratefully,
Gen Mech

Hi GM,
Have you checked the primer pump? Just pull the upper of the two small hoses - the one that leads into the manifold, and then operate the primer knob. If it squirts fuel out then you're okay there. I find that many of primer motors need several squirts to start readily...
- Scott

This is what's sometimes confusing about the J/E serial numbers and the "introduces" thing. It's "said" that the last two digits indicate the year, but often it's the second and third from the end, with the last digit indicating something else. It gets confusing when that last digit is an "introduces" letter; it's not so confusing when it's not. Good luck with your project.
