i have just swaped a 50 hp 77 evinrude with a 85 hp 77 evinrude everything lined up. but when we hooked up the perviously working controls it would not go into forward. so we took the controls and cables off the donor boat and put it on the bass boat. the controls again worked fine when mounted but when hooked up to the motor no reverse or neutral and we took the cables back off the motor no reverse and neutral whats the deal here thanks

Will the engine go into either gear manually? I'm sort of confused following your post. It's probably me. I get confused a lot.

Are you sure that you do not have a kink in the cable? Can hold the cable and using the shift lever move the cable in and out while you hold it with a little tension? Is the angle of the hookup to motor a little different for some reason?

I'm not sure if where you connect the cable to the shifter on the engine is higher or lower than the one you took it off of. If I understand correctly the control cable works fine. You hook it up to this engine and it freezes. You unhook it from the engine and it still is frozen. The problem is definitely not in the engine if this is the case. Has to be in your control box or the cable itself.

Re: no neutral no reverse

I would be tempted to purchase a new cable. Sometimes a wire get broken in there and hangs up inside the casing. You can't take them apart and repair them. Talk to your dealer and see if you can buy one and install it, very carefully. Ask him beforehand if it is not damaged in any way if you can return it if it is not the problem. You also might have something that is making it stick in your control box. It is possible that the cable needs more travel on this engine and the shift lever must go farther and is sticking on something inside. The control box isn't tough to take apart and inspect. Just make a note of where things go.
