I have a 1964 Johnson 5.5 hp cd-21a. A while back I posted a question about the fuel mix ratio. The response that I got was to mix 50:1. Tonight I was searching the forum for topics on motors like mine and many people are saying to mix 32:1 and some even 24:1. On this motor. What do you guys think would be the best mix? I just got it running good. I have a full tank of 50:1 at the lake ready to let her eat. What should i do?

Re: fuel mix ratio

OMC originally rated that engine at 50:1. In 1964 they switched all of their engines en masse to 50:1 from 24:1. Since the 5.5hp was discontinued the next year, most of the posts you see are from 24:1 rated engines.
That said, more may not help but it won't hurt. I personally run my smaller older engines a little heavy, around 32:1. But then again, I like the smell. :)

Re: fuel mix ratio

Will it be safe running 50:1 or should I add a little oil to get closer to 32:1?

Re: fuel mix ratio

50:1 is the prescribed mix according to OMC, stl. It is safe.

It is true that using a richer mix, 32:1 or 24:1 will not harm your engine, but it may have a negative effect on the beer fund. :)
