From the first day I bought this engine new, it has been hard to start, floods out plugs, smoke's like a train when started. I have searched the shop owners manual have came up with the following. Maybe a air leak into the fuel line causing the VRO'2 pump to pump more oil into the carburator's. Or a defective VRO'2 pump, or float adjusted to high in the carburator causing it to start hard, smoke alot, rough ideal. After the motor starts I have no problems after the smoke clears. This is the second time it has been in the shop, the first time the mechanic could not find the problem. Just cleaned the jets and sent it back. This engine only has 145 hours on the meter, bought it new in 96. Help me out guys. Email to asmith82@woh.rr.com

And my 96' 70 did the same thing after a couple of years. The longer it set out of use the more oil rich on initial startup.Did your engine always do this or just start doing it after a few years?

-Check to insure oil reservoir is venting properly
-Insure there are no fuel line air leaks from tank fitting to vro pump inlet

Only thing that could be surmised after extensive troubleshooting of my engines condition was a failed seal between the fuel and oil chambers of the vro pump that allowed oil leakby when out of use.

Remedies-replacement of VRO pump , or internal seal if you can research a parts source as any rebuild kits I'm aware of don't have the oil portion repalcement parts,or disabling the oiling feature of the exiting pump and premixing.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

-

It got worse as time went on. I owned the motor now for 9 years. Last three have been been the worse. I had a hunch the VRO'2 pump was going bad.
But I will also check for air in the fuel line.
Thanks
