HI
I have a friend who has a problem with his carby, 175 1998 johnson, he has had it back to the repair shop a lot and it is still not fixed. The problem is the overheat alarm goes off and engine slows to about 2000 RPM, sometimes turn off key for 10 seconds or so will fix problem but not always. parts replaced include water pump, thermostats, head gaskets and some electrical bits and pieces. when the alarm goes off (which is entirely random, maybe 1 min use maybe 3 hours) water stream from tell tale still strong and not overly hot,the shop has told him it is hard to fix as it is so intermittant. Any best guesses on what to replace??

OK, its going into SLOW.

You mentioned all the parts they replaced (by the way -- that motor doesnt have head gaskets -- if they told you they replaced "head gaskets", you need a new tech) but you never mentioned that the technicition verified that it actually was overheating or not. The tattle tail will not necessairly tell you that.

If it is indeed NOT overheating you might try replacing the temp sender (the one with two wires) but its more common that scale or some form of corrision has built up in that head in the cooling passage. Or if the head has been off at some point perhaps someone got carried away with the RTV sealer and its restricting water flow. It happens.

HI
The motor is NOT overheating, the sensor just thinks it is, the heads were taken off when the thermostats were replaced and he was told that they replaced "gaskets" so he assumed it was the head gaskets., I will get him to ask them to remove heads again and check that the cooling passeges are clear and make sure no "goo" has covered up something, the sensor has been tested but I thought at the time, because of intermittant fault replacement is best option, then at least he knows it is good.
