Hey guys I did a search and couldn't pin down my problem. Boat was sitting all winter but docked with no problems. She didn't fire right up so I removed the carbs and cleaned them well. No problem. It starts perfect now but has a definite surge at all rpms, obviously more noticeable at lower. Will only idle at about 2300 and when it surges it falls to 800. No gas leaks and pumping bulb doesn't affect. When I pull plug wires, one doesn't affect the way that it runs but it is firing pretty hot from wire. I put that plug in another cylinder and it is fine. Compression good. It sounds like fuel from description but I am almost positive it's ignition. Power pack? Coil? I can't see a way to switch coils without cutting wires to the power pack. Any other tests or ideas? Thanks in advance.

Welcome!!

Which 140 do you have? The model number will help us "see" what you have.

I was reading through my thread and thought that maybe you guys took my reply as being rude. When I said that it was obvious to me and not the rest of the world I simply meant that I was the only person that was looking at the engine. Sometimes the things that are obvious are overlooked. Sorry if it came through as being rude.

Jlowry,

What they want or need is the model and serial number off of your engine. There will be a plate on the side of the motor which will show these numbers. Once you get them and post them, I am sure they will help you out.

JLOWRYinIL,

If you can't get us the model number, tell us what the carbs were like when you cleaned them.

Were they 2 aluminum 2 barrel carbs or were there 4 individual "black plastic" carbs?

Good morning guys, it rained like crazy here all last night so I couldn't get the numbers off of the plate. The carbs are two aluminum two barrel units. Hope this helps.

Re: 140HP SEAHORSE SURGING

I just went to pick up stuff for a decarb and decided to pick up Champion plugs since it seems they are highly recommended in the forum. I was sure that for a '79 Johnson 140 V4 that the QL77JC4 was the right plug. I had the guy at NAPA check his chart and it did not give this as the plug. Is it right? Don't want to knock the top out of a piston. The plugs in it are the type that cannot be gapped

As I said, the QL77JC4 is fine, but the up-graded plug is QL82C.

UL77V would be a good choice....
I think the other plugs are for 78-thru, 115's...
