I want to put power trim/tilt on my '69 85Hp V4 Johnson. I have seen multiple ones on e-bay but they all seem to fit the 70-225hp 78-95 crossflows. Does anyone know if these would work on my engine?

If not, How about a cheap alternative?

Jermyn, back then the transom brackets were not design to work with a trim system, but they did build a tilt system for that engine--Bob

Just cked and CMC does build a trim kit for your motor, it is also a set back kit, the bad news is alittle over $600 at list

I know about the "universal" kits. Unfortunately, they all seem to be rather pricey. I was hoping to find a cheap alternative instead. Unless someone knows of something I can adapt for around $250-$300, I'll probably just stay with manual until I opt for a new boat

CMC units show up on eBay fairly regularly. I picked up a very clean one for $250 last year. I initially was looking for a OMC original for my '76 85hp. They were few and far between.

I have thought about that, would you be able to change the tilt tube and get newer brackets so a ptt would fit.And will it fit the hole where the piston is all ready attached under the bracket

Do a search on this forum for "72 100 HP has T&T" posted by me. I took a 78 or 79 model T&T, swivel bracket and transom bracket and changed out the swivel bracket and transom bracket on my 72 100 HP Johnnie and now have the later model T&T that works perfect. Total cost including paint to match was only about $300. I got everything ready in advance and it took me about two hours to swap everything over. In addition to getting late model T&T you also get the later model transom mounting brackets. It was a neat project and the CV-16 loves having T&T. Pics are included in the post. As the 69 to 72 OMCs are in the same family, this should work fine for you. Good Luck.

Russ In Texas

Didn't you have to make some adjustment per your other topic? Can you show me what you actually had to cut/trim off?

Re: Power trim for 85ESL69S

Jermyn,
I installed the kit late last year and only got to use it once before the end of the season. The installation went quite well, it took me about four hours - no problems encountered, bolts lined up nicely etc. However, I did experience porpoising (sp?) that wasn't present previously. This is probably due to the set back and height I set the motor at. I'm hoping that some tweaking with the setup will eliminate this. Other than that it was nice not have to manually tilt the motor. Others who have used the CMC unit seem to always post good results. I expect once I get rid of the porpoiseing, I'll be happy with mine too.

Re: Power trim for 85ESL69S

Jermyn,
On mine there was a boss on the leg right above the lower swivel bracket attach point. There was a strap the went around the original swivel bracket haled on to the boss by two bolts. You dont use the strap or the bolts and need to grind the boss down almost flush with the leg so the motor will swivel stop to stop. I backed my boat into my airplane hanger, put a come along on the lifting eye and turned the motor loose at the upper and lower swivel bracket mounts. Then I removed the old transom mount and swivel bracket as a unit and bolted the new transom mount and swivel bracket (with T&T) in place. Then after trimming the afore mentioned bosses bolted the motor back onto the new upper and lower mounts.
I did this all by myself in about two hours.
You will need use your old swivel bracket or you can do like I did and scrounge up another one so that I could assemble everything in advance and change everything out as a unit. Keep in mind I wanted to keep the "stock look" so to me it was worth the effort.

Russ In Texas
