Howdy, I just purchases my first boat with a 9.5 seahorse motor but a can't figure out the year to get the manual. the model # is scratched out but the serial # is J3228794. Any help would be appreciated.

Check the Welsh plug to see if the model number is stamped into it. It's a quarter sized dome on the top of the block just aft of the flywheel. If that doesn't have it we can try narrowing it down.

Paul
The number stamped on the Welsh plug I assumed to be the serial # it being similar to serial #'s of other motors in the 9.5 johnson thread. On the motor cover I can make out what seems to be CR1 -8803 but a few numbers are barely legible so that's just my best guess.

Ok, well fortunately often when people give us their serial numbers here when they're trying to find their years. A survey reveals:
J3248544 1970
j3232130 1970
J3228794 Your S/N
J3224163 1970
J3222466 1970
So that strongly suggests it's a '70. Does it look identical to this:
1970 9.5, click here
(the one on the left - sorry, this was the best pic I could find)
And a belated "Welcome to Iboats!"

EDIT: Here's a better one:

Hey! looks like we have a match!
Sorry it took so long to reply, our IT roomate moved out and the net has been down ever since. What would the best route be for aquiring the manual? The motor hasn't ran for about 2 years so I'm sure it needs some TLC before it will run. I'm sure I'll be posting again soon with ther next bump on the road to actually throwing a line in. Thanks for the help.

Awsome site!
Adam

Here's your best bet:
(Evinrudes are the same as Johnsons for any given year, just different covers & paint in the case of the 9.5)

Second best bet:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook

Third best bet is to borrow one from your local library. The factory manuals are superior to Seloc or Clymer, especially in the case of the 9.5 since it's very different from the rest in the stable.
Before going and spending a lot on it, make sure it's a viable engine. Perform a compression check. Post the numbers you get here for evaluation.
