I am having troubles getting my 6hp evinrude started. It is not getting fuel to the carb. When I pump the primer it is instantly hard. When I pull the line on the intake fuel shoots out. I took the carb off and cleaned it but it is still not getting fuel through the intake. If I spray carb cleaner into the butterfly valve it fires and runs for a moment. When I pulled the needle from the jet I may have tightened it too tight. Looking for suggestions. Thanks

Pick up a carb rebuild kit. They are cheap. Sounds like your float may be stuck because you have scored the needle valve. Go ahead and put new parts in the whole thing while you have it apart. Make sure that the float is set properly and releases this needle when it drops.

I'm not really sure what you mean by this. Are you saying you threaded the low speed needle valve in all the way? It's initial setting is 1 and 1/2 turns out from lightly seated.

Thanks for the quick reply. Does the rebuild kit come with a new float. The original is made of cork and I'm not sure if thats a good thing. How do I know if the float is set properly or how do I check it? I am new at carb rebuilds. You also mentioned that I may have scored the needle valve. What would cause this? Thanks again for the help.

Rebuilding a 6hp carb is pretty easy. The kit from your local Johnny/Rude dealer comes with a plastic modern fuel-tolerant float. The aftermarket kit (18-7043) from Iboats or NAPA doesn't come with one. The difference in price between the aftermarket kit and the J/E one is a couple dollars.
The float must be set so it's even with the carb's casting rim when the carb is held upside-down.
You can save yourself a *huge* amount of frustration if you pick up a service manual. If you don't want to invest in one, then borrow one from the local library. If there's such a thing as a good investment in boating, it's the manual.

Just purchased a rebuild kit so I'll give it a go tonight. I will look into getting a manual also. Thanks again
